Yeah, I don't know what it is about the WalMart I am talking about, but it's so crappy. As you said, dirty, clothes all over the floor, and crappy clientele. It's Islandia there (Central Islip), which is next to Brentwood, and the shopping center is an extremely nice shopping center in general, but the WalMart is so crappy next to other ones.
The one in Centereach is like night and day to this one.

He should see the PathMark I just went by on 125th St and Lexington Ave..... LOL.
I parked my car at Lexington and 122nd St to go to the Yankee game earlier. (Easy to park there, and take the 4 train up 3 stops....). I was all the way home in Suffolk in a good hour...from leaving the stadium to home. It's so much easier than dealing with parking near the stadium. And it's a quick subway ride to 125th from Yankee Stadium, and then you fly right onto the Triborough Bridge at 125th....

I also went to the Yankees game on Sunday. That is basically the way I travel to the stadium, except I park in Astoria and get the M60 at the 31st Street. If all goes well, I can get from Bayside to YS in as little as 40 minutes. Going home add on about 10 more minutes for Sunday afternoon traffic on 125th St. Sometimes it can take extra time to go from 125/Lex to 2nd Avenue. I've been using this route for the last 2 years and it works just fine.

So I've been in that PathMark on occasion on Sunday afternoons. I've seen worse than that and I've seen better. The one on Linden Place in Flushing frequently looks like a monsoon went through it.

You get more for your money in Brentwood, as it's a cheaper neighborhood....so that sounds about right. West Babylon is a much nicer neighborhood than Brentwood, so you get less for your money. West Babylon is very working class, probably about like Deer Park. Babylon Village and Babylon are more expensive than West Babylon. You will get a LOT less for your money in Babylon Village than in West Babylon. It's the old "Location, location, location".

As for the taxes, Brentwood is Islip town, and West Babylon is Babylon Town. The various Towns on Long Island tax differently.

Most of Long Island looked average to me. Nothing great and nothing bad. But I've only stayed in Huntington, Babylon, and Commack.

Long Island is Spotty, you have an extremely nice neighborhood next to a working class neighborhood, next to a really crappy neighborhood.

I don't know where you were in "Huntington", so it's hard to say. Huntington is large. Huntington Harbor is a REALLY nice area, but Huntington Station is sort of crappy. Then there's straight Huntington which is "okay". Babylon is also spotty. West Babylon is "okay", sort of suburban. Babylon Village is really really nice.
The same with Commack. A really nice area, but also has a sort of working class "subururban" neighborhood next to it too.

You can't really judge Long Island by a few towns. You have some EXTREMELY rich and beautiful areas, and you drive a mile, and cross the pavement of a road and all of a sudden you are in an average or crappy neighborhood. You will even get that on Nassau's Gold Coast, and the Hamptons, both of which have some of the most affluent areas in the country. Nassau especially has some very "suburban" areas, next to some really nice, wealthy areas.

As for "bad" areas....if you want to compare to South Central, LI has some suburban slums like Roosevelt, Wyandanch, Freeport, Gordon Heights, Coram Hill, Hempstead, and others. But you cross a pavement or RR tracks, or a highway, and all of a sudden it's nice.

Then you have some "neither heaven nor hell" sort of neighborhoods like Mastic, Shirley, which are not really a "slum", but not necescarily all that great either. Sort of like "Landford" on the old Roseanne show. Brentwood would be on the lower end of that category.

Then you have solid working class, yet "suburban" looking areas where they are average, stable neighborhoods, yet are the definition of working class suburbia, such as Deer Park, West Babylon, perhaps even Levittown, Hicksville, etc.

Not bad at all. I was home at a little after 11, and the game ended about 10.

Perhaps. 125th/Lex is not the greatest neighborhood, but it's not all that bad either. I had no problem leaving my car there, and it was fine when I got back. We had to walk about 3 blocks from where I parked to the subway station.
I probably wouldn't have even gotten out of the car there 10-15 years ago, it's improved quite a bit. We did stop at a little deli before getting in the car, to grab some iced teas and waters after getting out of the subway at a little deli (that had bullet proof glass), but hey I have been to much worse neighborhoods and felt fine too.

Leave Wyandanch alone. They have been quiet for quite some time. It's Brentwood that's in the news all the time.

What good would that do to fix an aggressive driver?

The homes are cheap to you, but expensive to people from Florida because they don't have many high paying jobs. They have lots of mortgage defaults IINM. And the weather is terrible IMO. Too hot and too humid. But different strokes. I know that many like it and I know that people can adapt and get used to it.

Well I'm sure more people retire to Sarasota and Pinellas Counties, instead of Nassau and Suffolk. I remember going swimming in Sarasota in November the last two years, while NY had cold weather.

Before the housing collapse, my home in Florida was worth just a little less than the homes in Brentwood.

I don't know if many people get used to the heat. I know a couple that just retired and moved to Naples. I told them they'll be back in Jersey within two years.

Part of the appeal of Florida is the tax situation more than the weather. My 80-something great aunt lives in Wantuagh and her house is like 8k in property tax. That's fucking ridculous. Alot of it is so LIers can boast having "America's greatest school districts". Not to mention having no commerical tax base to even it out.

I forsee a trend of seniors moving back into the city in order to both be within a convenient area as well as not have to
