I guess it depends on where you are, but I always have thought of Brentwood as a Hispanic area, not necessarily "Black". Brentwood has been hispanic, and getting more so for many decades. My friend lived in a white area of Brentwood, that becamse Hispanic by the 80's, but it was never really "black".I think he may be thinking of nearby Central Islip which was quite black, and becoming Hispanic. |

I remember missing my exit, and having to get off at the next exit, and drive back west one exit.I'm not making it seem good, bad, safe, dangerous, rich, poor, or any of the terms we use. I'm only saying that when I got off the LIE, and sat at the red light, I could not believe how much garbage people throw into the little grassy area between the off ramp and expressway. It's not an indictment of all Suffolk residents. |

My friends from Ridgewood moved to Brentwood in 1978 or so, and they moved onto an all black street, with a little playground at the end of the street. There were no drive-by shootings, graffiti, etc...Their younger sisters both married black men and moved to Ridgewood to be closer to work. How ironic that they moved to the neighborhood their parents left 30 years ago.Today, it's mostly Hispanic and Brentwood seems to be in the news a lot. |

If you did, you'd be concerned. You'd worry if it's safe for them to go to the mall, or what kids are zoned for their school, and all the things city people worried about when fleeing to Long Island.I think the drive-by shootings are reason for concern. |

It's in the middle of no where.Actually, Eagle Estates in Medford showed signs of "could go either way" back in the 80's. It never got as bad as Gordon Heights, but It was pretty rough there until the late 80's. But the mid 90's, it began a complete 360. Lots of young couples came in and bought out a lot of the rentals, and it is now a nice decent neighborhood. There were a LOT of boarded up houses and lots of rentals (section 8) there until the early 90's. I remember the shopping center where Island Recreational is was like a hellhole in the 80's. Now it's a decent shopping center, it's hard to believe how crappy it once was there. |

Sorry, I was unclear about the indexical 'these areas' - I meant the less affluent areas generally - parts of Freeport, Roosevelt, Central Islip, Brentwood, etc. - and I don't know anything about eagle estates specifically; hell, I need a map just to find it specifically! The comment was more directed about who communities can 'turn around', and not 'turn around'. I think that the increased foreclosure rate is going to have sinking effect for the affected areas. |

I agree totally with you, it's like night and day there from the way it was in the 80's. Again, it never got as bad as either Gordon Heights or North Bellport (Pace Park), but it did begin to deteriorate for a while. By the late 90s it had GREATLY improved. That shopping center isn't bad anymore at all, it used to be a poster for all that was wrong in Eagle Estates in the 80's back then. I kinda like that Chinese Buffet in there, have been there a few times, although I don't got o Chinese buffets often, so haven't been there in a while. I never tried that pizza place there, I also prefer La Margherita on Station Rd. Island Recreational stuck it out, it was there way back when too. I went there often back in the 80's as my cousin had a pool in the 80's and we often picked up supplies there. |

Parts of Long Island are probably like Compton (what do I know?), but they are probably in Queens, Brooklyn, and adjacent. So maybe Nassau, but most of Long Island seems decent.
