Brentwood Long Island Shootings

Lovely Long Island Town

I know you Suffolk County people will brush this off as being, "Not near my town", etc.......but Suffolk is shot(no pun intended). You have to go far, very far east before you can find a decent town or school.

Umm, Babylon, Islip, East Islip, West Islip, Oakdale, Smithtown, Commack, Dix Hills...to name a few. Of course, this depends on the definition of "decent", I suppose.

Baloney. Brentwood has been that way for over 30 years. Most of Long Island is very nice, not like the cesspool of the 5 boroughs. As far as "You have to go far, very far east before you can find a decent town or school", all you have to do is go west as most of Nassau is beautiful.

Not at all, Long Island is really nice the only place where I'd feel unsafe over there is Roosevelt, I used to think that Riverhead was unsafe until I walked around the area after I missed a bus once.

There are plenty of good school districts and towns near Brentwood.

Parts of Coram are nice, and Mastic and Shirley gets a bad rep. While far from "wonderful", Shirley is not as bad as Wyandanch, Roosevelt, etc. It definitely a "salt of the earth" blue collar location, and a lot more like Roseanne's "Lanford" than some crappy area like Wyandanch.
And Bohemia? Are you kidding? What the heck is wrong with Bohemia? I wouldn't even put that in the same category as Shirley, much less Wyandanch or some of the others. Bohemia?

Green Acres! Sunrise! Shall we name more malls that have been citified? This is my point about Long Island. You have your high crime areas, but you still have to share the same malls, schools, beaches, etc......... In NY, there were bad areas like Bed-Stuy and Jamaica, but it never had an impact on quality of life in Middle Village or Fresh Meadows. On Long Island, the malls have been ruined because of surrounding towns, and it's residents.

When I drove to Islip Airport, I got off the LIE at exit 57, and it was filthy. It seemed like everyone who got stuck at the red light through their food and bottles onto the grass.

Another time, I was coming from the Hamptons, and drove through Mastic-Shirley, and we stopped for something, and I commented on how disgusting it was. Just like exit 57, there was garbage everywhere.

Long Island is not the same as it was.

You are totally exaggerating. And I was joking about Bay Shore Mall, I have no problem with Bay Shore Mall. And there are plenty of malls that are fine....
And as for Green Acres, it's effected more by the fact that it is two feet from the city line than that it's "so impacted" by LI bad areas.

For people like my cousins, who remember better times on Long Island, they have to have a good reason to go to Sunrise Mall. It's totally fucked up. Purse snatchings. Kids throwing rocks at cars from a nearby overpass. Kids driving cars into the mall to break into stores. Constant auto theft.

People who grew up on Long Island, remember better times. For someone like you, who grew up in Ridgewood, and moved out there later on, you don't remember the good 'ol days.

Uhm, while I grew up in Ridgewood, my mother is from Suffolk Country and my whole family was always out here, and spent just about every weekend, school break weeks off, and the entire summer every year at my cousin's house and Grandmother's house. I know long Island very well all through the 70's, 80's, 90's and to today, so know perfectly well "the good ole days".

Maybe Brentwood was "like that"(as you put it, we know what you really mean), but I don't remember the drive-by shootings back in the day.

Brentwood was known to me as a place that you don't want to live in for as long as I can remember. Originally, I think that I thought that it was like an urban problem zone, but actually I later learned by looking at pictures of homes in real estate listing magazines that it is very much a suburb.

Brentwood used to be mostly black AFAIK. These shootings seem to involve Hispanos.

I don't know about the demographics now. Yes, my understanding was that in the past that there was a large black population, and probably there still is. Hispanic population has been exploding in much of the less affluent communities in Nassau and Suffolk, so that wouldn't be surprising.

If you go too far east you'll run into Riverhead East Freeport.

There's no reason for these drive-by gangsta rap style shootings. I saw the news reports from Brentwood, and the homes look nice, and neighborhood looks quiet. The kids embrace the city gangsta rap lifestyle, when they should be enjoying life in a nice quiet area.

Gordon Heights is a crappy neighborhood. Very crappy. It's like the Coram Hill section of Coram, North Bellport, Wyandanch, etc. Gordon Heights actually is not a zip code though, it's in the Medford post office.

It probably wasn't 57..... You could mean Exit 58, that's Old Nichols road in CI. Still not as bad as you make it seem. And Hooters is right there.... :)
