Maybe Brentwood was "like that"(as you put it, we know what you really mean), but I don't remember the drive-by shootings back in the day.

Brentwood was known to me as a place that you don't want to live in for as long as I can remember. Originally, I think that I thought that it was like an urban problem zone, but actually I later learned by looking at pictures of homes in real estate listing magazines that it is very much a suburb.

Brentwood used to be mostly black AFAIK. These shootings seem to involve Hispanos.

I don't know about the demographics now. Yes, my understanding was that in the past that there was a large black population, and probably there still is. Hispanic population has been exploding in much of the less affluent communities in Nassau and Suffolk, so that wouldn't be surprising.
