Estimating crowd sizes for unticketed events is quite complicated, not least because depending on who's doing the estimating there's usually some incentive to exaggerate or minimize the actual size. In addition, when people are standing rather than seated a crowd is likely to be in flux, making estimates even more inaccurate.Even non-controversial events can be subject to this effect. To cite a famous example, if the claimed turnout for the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena were really as high as the organizers claim, hundreds of people would be crushed to death each year. |

The Federal Aviation Administration frequently will issue a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) for events with special security concerns. There's always one for the president whenever he travels outside of the restricted airspace in Washington. Other events that will get TFR's are forest fires when there are aerial tankers, space launches, air shows, blasting at the iron mines in Minnesota, and disasters like tornados. And there's a permanent TFR over Disney World, no flights allowed below 3,000 feet. |

Posted by Stephen Bauman on Sat May 25 07:35:06 2024, in response to Re: Trump In The Bronx, posted by Peter Rosa on Fri May 24 18:17:49 2024. Estimating crowd sizes for unticketed events is quite complicatedIt's quite easy. You know the venue's area and divide by approximately 5 sq-ft/person to get the crowd size. The subway crowding equivalent is 3.8 sq-ft/person for super crush loads. It's probably a bit more than 5 sq-ft because the police will provide "aisles" so that they can rush EMT's to somebody needing medical assistance in the crowd. Does anyone know where exactly in Crotona Park the rally took place? It's difficult to determine from the pictures. There are two areas that look suitable: the amphitheatre and the summer stage. The amphitheatre is about 250x200 for 50K-Ft or 10K people. The summer stage is about 150x100 for 3000 people. |
