Estimating crowd sizes for unticketed events is quite complicated, not least because depending on who's doing the estimating there's usually some incentive to exaggerate or minimize the actual size. In addition, when people are standing rather than seated a crowd is likely to be in flux, making estimates even more inaccurate.

Even non-controversial events can be subject to this effect. To cite a famous example, if the claimed turnout for the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena were really as high as the organizers claim, hundreds of people would be crushed to death each year.
