Glad you like Tennessee. Don't you miss Chicago? As for Florida, they are querulous about the heat and humidity. The media personalities complain about the streak of 90 degree days and always hope for cooler weather. People are never happy. WFLA radio and television never stop complaining. Most Florida residents are pale. They spend little or no time in the sun, even though it's all you need for the benefits.

In November some guy ambushed Hillsborough Sheriff Officers with his car. One officer nearly lost his leg. The South is very high crime. North is safer and healthier. Most people I know who move down South, like to drink a lot of alcohol. Warm weather and alcohol go together. These people sit indoors or in the shade and drink away. They have no hobbies and are out of shape. But it's great drinking in The Villages or Pasco County year round.

One Florida attorney told me that a lot of elderly Florida women are happy when their husband dies. This gives them the freedom to leave and go back north to be near family and friends.

Dade and Broward. I don't think any working class, middle class northerners have retired there in decades. Not in measurable numbers. They go to Jupiter or places up north because it's affordable. Or on the west coast like Charlotte County, Pasco, Hernando, or The Village. Sarasota and Manatee are expensive. And then when you move to these affordable places, and read the news, and find out about a raid on a meth lab outside your subdivision, you're it's much closer to home then when you lived in Glendale, or Babylon or wherever in NY.

Almost all of people I grew up with, are proud of their relationship with alcohol. They go on a cruise ship to drink, and not worry about a DUI. Those who are retired, most of their FB photos feature them with alcohol. It's their way of saying, "Hey, I'm retired from my civil service job and don't have to worry about a random and now I can drink to my DNA's content".

Florida is growing fast. Tampa and Orlando have really bad traffic jams. Orlando is having a harder time attracting events because the traffic is so bad event coordinators don't want to return. Red light cams all over Kennedy Blvd. Bike lanes taking over roads.

These are people who retire much younger than most people. I wouldn't expect them to die so soon after retiring. They don't save enough to retire. They have a defined pension plan. In some cases they sell or inherit a house in a middle-class neighborhood like Glendale, and buy cheaper real estate in another place. For them, one of the main benefits to being retired is that freedom to drink alcohol daily and not worry about being fit for duty. But believe me, they drink all the time.
