The news media keep referring to what happens on the 6th as "certifying" the electors or the electoral vote, but that's really not accurate. What they actually will be doing is formally counting the votes. In order to do so, they have to determine which are the votes that they should count. Normally, the answer is "all of them", but there is a procedure in place whereby votes whose legitimacy is in question can be challenged. In the 143 years that the law providing for that has been on the books, no electoral votes have actually been rejected as invalid, and it is a safe bet that none will be this year either. |
