Nixon had been disgraced, Ford was a boob and the country was not in great shape economically. The GOP was the party of corruption. Carter was voted in as a breath of fresh Southern air - a smiling face, a courteous demeanor and a big ol' helpin' of Southern charm. He was, in a way, the Barack Obama of 1976. So what happened? His utter incompetency turned the country against the Democrats in just four short years. People didn't want to hear about "diminished expectations" or a "great malaise". They wanted someone to be a leader. By the time Reagan came in in 1980, Americanswere fed up with Carter and couldn't wait to get rid of him. No President ever came in with so much political capital, only to have it flushed away so quickly. That's why Carter sucked. |
