The Church in general is taking this attitude to attract Latinos.

I think it's more like the Church is taking this attitude because the Pope is taking this attitude, based on his extensive experience with Latin and South America.

SMAZ and I have read it. We are fully aware this Pope is not a liberal on cutural issue, only on economic issues.

After reading Evangelii Gaudium, I believe he is more to the left on economic issues than North American liberals or global social-democrats are.
This may have to do with his Latin American upbringing. Let's not forget that he is from the same place that Dr. Ernesto Guevara came from and his understanding of the world comes from what he's seen with his own eyes.

I don't think an official document featuring such a scathing attack on modern-day capitalistic structures, practices, ideologies and the people who support them and benefit from them has ever been written by a religious figure of a Pontiff's importance and influence.
Its economics chapter and the conclusions it reaches are in full accord with something that would be written in Mother Jones magazine or in Adbusters.

Pope Francis is saying what Barack Obama should have been saying all along.
He is unleashing the "Dangerous Church" that Father Michael Pfleger preaches about.

The best part of it all, is that he is doing so while leading from the front and by example.

No wonder the reactionaries are going into apoplexy.

He's a moderate on gays. He has said that the Church should not dwell much on those kinds of issues.

From NY Times article:

Six months into his papacy, Pope Francis sent shock waves through the Roman Catholic church on Thursday with the publication of his remarks that the church had grown “obsessed” with abortion, gay marriage and contraception, and that he had chosen not to talk about those issues despite recriminations from critics.

His surprising comments came in a lengthy interview in which he criticized the church for putting dogma before love, and for prioritizing moral doctrines over serving the poor and marginalized. He articulated his vision of an inclusive church, a “home for all” — which is a striking contrast with his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, the doctrinal defender who envisioned a smaller, purer church.

Francis told the interviewer, a fellow Jesuit: “It is not necessary to talk about these issues all the time. The dogmatic and moral teachings of the church are not all equivalent. The church’s pastoral ministry cannot be obsessed with the transmission of a disjointed multitude of doctrines to be imposed insistently.

Yeah, he appears on traditional lists, but those are based on sources from many centuries later. Early sources (viz the contemporary Epistle to the Romans and the first-or-second-century Acts of the Apostles) do not corroborate this. Peter certainly did not establish the church in Rome, and the evidence that he was even there is unreliable and late.

There's a marginally better case for the other see that claims Petrine succession, Antioch. We can at least be confident that he actually went there.

Peter certainly did not establish the church in Rome, and the evidence that he was even there is unreliable and late.

The Church was established by Jesus Christ in what is now Israel and the Palestinian Territories and he delegated the authority to lead it to Saint Peter.

Saint Clement, a contemporary of Peter, wrote about the latter's life and martyrdom.

Clement is widely regarded as setting the structures of the Roman Church as we know it today.

The Church was established by Jesus Christ in what is now Israel and the Palestinian Territories and he delegated the authority to lead it to Saint Peter.

That is not an historical view. It is at odds with what Paul tells us about his own career in Galatians 1-2.

The Gospels – which all are hagiographic, rather than historical accounts – record Jesus commissioning the twelve (and the seventy), with Matthew alone freely elaborating the Caesarea Philippi incident from his source Mark, to turn Peter's villainy into something less ignominious. This is consistent with the view that Matthew was connected with Antioch.

Saint Clement, a contemporary of Peter, wrote about the latter's life and martyrdom.

Not true. The work known as 1 Clement does not even represent itself as being by Clement: it is written from "the church of God which is in Rome" to "the church of God which is in Corinth". It indeed mentions Peter's martyrdom, but it does so very briefly and makes no mention of where it happened or in what circumstances. Indeed, the vagueness of the account is highly suggestive that it was not at Rome, and from where he ends up in the Acts of the Apostles, it was probably at Jerusalem (or maybe Antioch).

Clement is widely regarded as setting the structures of the Roman Church as we know it today.

But again, this is the work of authors centuries later trying to back-project their own agendas onto the first century. There probably wasn't even monoepiscopacy at Rome at that point.

It is just like when the human waves of Viet Minh attacked the French at Dien Bien Phu or the Confederates entered the fields of fire and the Union artillery opened up. The Confederates fell down dead but their friends kept coming but then they were knocked down dead but then their coworkers kept coming and on and on until there was nothing left but the flag bearer and little bugle boy. Fascinating mentality not to give an inch despite withering fire. SMAZ and kew gardens teleport are exchanging brutal salvo after brutal salvo without even stopping for a second to water down the barrels and without backing down. It is frightening and I am anxious to see who gives quarter.

The greater question will always be if Kew Gardens Teleport slayed one of the AEMs for some personal offense taken or if he did so as a warning to Lady Amanda de Fordham in this epilogue to the Hundred Years War of the Roses in order to solve the issue of the monepiscopacy once and for all.

Below starting at 2:16 we can all, with lamentable melancholy, admire one of the AEMs inspiring performance of the popular Ambrosian chant "Angelfuck" in C-Minor.
