Yeah, he appears on traditional lists, but those are based on sources from many centuries later. Early sources (viz the contemporary Epistle to the Romans and the first-or-second-century Acts of the Apostles) do not corroborate this. Peter certainly did not establish the church in Rome, and the evidence that he was even there is unreliable and late.There's a marginally better case for the other see that claims Petrine succession, Antioch. We can at least be confident that he actually went there. |
