Peter certainly did not establish the church in Rome, and the evidence that he was even there is unreliable and late.The Church was established by Jesus Christ in what is now Israel and the Palestinian Territories and he delegated the authority to lead it to Saint Peter. Saint Clement, a contemporary of Peter, wrote about the latter's life and martyrdom. Clement is widely regarded as setting the structures of the Roman Church as we know it today. |
