I was thinking of getting rid of cable because I hardly watch TV. The problem is that I never watch network TV so if I get rid of cable I would have no need for a TV. I think that I'll keep it just for football.

Maybe. You used to have to have a cable account that carried espn, but I think that they changed it last year. Still there's lots of West Coast games that they don't carry that are shown on the Fox Sports network. Plus I like to flip back and forth between games.

There ya go ... you know the rest of the story then. Yes, reason why I brought up Betty is that I interviewed her years ago and saw many discrepencies between her story and what came out of Chicago. Made me seriously question Elijah, but never did get the interview I needed to finish the story.

So let me leave this here as far as subchat goes, given that there are many who didn't even bother to study up on the story and discussing it would only bring out unnecessary frictions ... for the time I put into it, I don't buy either side's story as to what really happened since Malcolm couldn't be interviewed, nor could Elijah. Wallace seemed to have more of an idea as to what actually happened, but he refused to discuss it with any of us from WBAI at the time and since it all came down several years before I got there, all I have to go by was thee transcripts from 1964 when Betty resurfaced in Harlem with an axe to grind.

Will that do between us at least since no good can come of discussing much more about it here anyway? :)

i did not go for the original so called official media report on this subject and i can defend messenger Elijah Muhammad well on this and other issues as well
i will admit that the lack of progress by so called black America today is not something i am happy with
i also own almost every video on this subject i could get my hands on

Understood ... one of these days, hopefully we can get together. This was one of many stories WBAI had me cover when I started out, and sadly I never really got many of the answers I was looking for at the time. Given all that, I'd be interested in hearing more details than I was able to get my hands on back then since I was involved in the community with the rebuilding of the Apollo and the early days of Inner City Broadcasting in NYC. A lot of stories swirled around back then.

I'll just say that's an awful lot of stuff to study. I had enough difficulty just in sorting through all of the original publications of "Muhammad Speaks" around that time hoping to find some clues. Interesting stuff, and even more interesting some of the very positive things the movement did on the streets of Harlem and the Bronx in countering the problems of the time. Can't say I agreed with all of them as far as some of the rage elements went, but the results of the discipline they brought were quite clear.

Hours? Heh. I spent months on the story ... the tie-in was the JFK investigation that Jim Garrison was working on at the time and the tie-in to the blowup between Elijah and Malcolm. Just so you know how this white boy from da Bronx got put onto the story in the first place.

Spent a LOT of time going nowhere on both stories. :)

What I *did* get out of that story though was some really good stories on the positive influences of NOI driving the dealers off the streets and teaching some respect to the kids for their community and their neighbors. That impressed me to no end. NOI did for NYC what the Panthers did for Oakland although comparing the two ... well ... heh.

I have indeed ... Burt Lancaster. :)

As to the Panthers and Oakland, well ... Chinese influence there. Add to that the California gun thing and the brutality in the community at the time, made perfect sense. "Know the law, know yourself." And before things got stupid, they knew the law inside out and played right to the edge of the rules. That takes some smarts. And what they did for the community itself. Oakland was a hellhole. They did something about it, and like it or not, the weapon thing was about the only thing that kept Huey and company from getting beaten like everybody else. Extreme yes, but clearly necessary at the time. It's not like they were gangbangers like Compton. :)

LOL at Jerry Brown taking it on, he actually did some good there as mayor himself. And I have to agree. Back in 2008 I too was hoping some of the shit was past us all, but leave it to the conservatards to just keep banging on that "Southern strategy drum."

Take heart though in the fact that aside from the way idiots are paying it, SOME things have improved and there's a lot more awareness than there used to be. It's been slow as hell, but it IS happening. Have some faith in the kids coming up today - what we had to deal with isn't the lay of the land with them. Encourage wisdom, bro! :)

It's really the only advice there is. Enlightenment happens one person at a time. Gotta be there to make it happen. Still doing my part up here, that's why when I heard that Easy is helping out too, I encouraged him to talk to folks. It helps everyone. Those who think "jihad" means "war" have no idea of what a "struggle against evil" is actually all about. Hate to sound corny, but it's true ... and you know who said it ... "Keep hope alive" ... it's everybody's duty. Don't let the destructors win!

Oh I can't wait to hear the shit this subthread will stir up with some of our haters here. But I welcome the razzing. Heh.

Oh I can't wait to hear the shit this subthread will stir up with some of our haters here. But I welcome the razzing. Heh

Doubt It Kevin you two are speaking from first hand experience im sure yer stuff was read yes, maybe a comment from some then again maybe not.

My dad was in the NOI both of what you two talked about has merit he talked in great length to us about those times, i wont even get into it here not worth it. Some folks got their own minds made up already.Still in the end like my dad said "The root of distrust is still folks worst enemy" sad but true.

The relationship is that you keep insisting that for there to be homicide there must have been an illegal act prior to the killing.

And I say that's not true. You can be acting carelessly or recklessly but not in any illegal way until the moment you kill someone, and then you've commited a crime because your prior actions were careless or reckless but not illegal.

Another example, this one from real life. A nearly blind friend of mine was crossing with a walk sign. A driver of an SUV was making a turn and hit him. Until the fraction of a second before the collision, he did nothing wrong. It was only the failure to yield to a pedestrian when making a turn that was illegal, and it happened less than a second before the death. I think that was criminally negligent homicide, though the police did not arrest the driver.
