It'll be an extremely hard sell because, as I've mentioned before, we're going in the opposite way. People are retiring at younger and younger ages notwithstanding increased life expectancy and Social Security's woes. You might say that 55 is becoming the new 65, in other words the standard retirement age. Should present trends continue I wouldn't be altogether surprised to see retirement at 50 becoming commonplace. Many of those who are "retiring" at 55 today will find themselves back in the work force in a few years. Most Americans -- and especially the baby boomers -- are quite unprepared to retire at 55 (or even 65 or 70). |

Does that mean that you're going to start flying planes into American skyscrapers . . . ?The government of the Emirates almost certainly is more frightened of Islamic fundamentalism than is the United States. It is essentially impossible to come up with a scenario in which the United States becomes an Islamic fundamentalist regime. As the old saying goes, Islamic fundamentalists are quite effective at bringing fellow Muslims back into the fold but are total flops when it comes to converting outsiders, whether voluntarily or by force. On the other hand, it is not at all difficult to imagine the Emirates succumbing to Taliban-style fundamentalism, most likely in Domino Effect fashion following the fall of Saudi Arabia.
