Here's a man who can explain it better than me. Science historian James Burke really lays out how important these "revolutionary religious fanatics" were almost singlehandedly responsible for creating the modern technological world (the one with the ability to build 2 110 story skyscrapers) into existence. One of the most galling misconceptions made by many modern people is that freedom "from" religion was responsible for the technological and cultural advancements rooted from the Italian Renaissance. That's simply not true. Newton was a religious fanatic who was driven to invent modern physics just to see how "God" operated. Galileo may have been a harsh critic of the Pope, but he received Communion every week he was sentenced to house arrest for preaching his anti-Aristotle view of the universe (the last 10 years of his life, to be exact). Michael Faraday, the man credited with discovering the connection between electricity and magnetism that pretty much dictates how we generate almost all of our electricity (as well as how we communicate electronically) was a Glassite, a Scotish form of Dissenter. |
