Not as a "race" they aren't. Native Americans is understood to mean those that are descended from the people that were here 520+ years ago. I agree that the language could be more precise, but we all know what is meant.

Or we kinda know. I never understood why aboriginal Americans from what is now Arizona would have one name while those from a couple hundred miles away in Mexico would have another.
