By giving a cursory look at Argentinians, the amount of mixing does not seem substantial (as opposed to Brazil with its blacks or Bolivia or Peru with their heavy Native population and more sparse White population).That shows how looks can be deceiving. Genetic testing gives a more reliable answer on ancestry. But yes, Argentina is on the whole much whiter than the northern parts of the continent, which as I said is an example of how South America mirrors North America in its racial composition (i.e., it gets whiter as you go poleward). But US whites have mixed more with blacks, Hispanics and Asians (as well as Natives) than Argentinians have. One difference among American whites is how they are defined: mixed race individuals are usually classified with the non-white group. This means the self-identified white in America is probably less mixed than in Argentina. |
