Posted by JayMan on Mon Mar 14 20:29:25 2011 Now that I have your attention, this is on average of course.But after analyzing the Add Health data, a massive study of teens in America, Satoshi Kanazawa, an evolutionary psychologist at the London School of Economics, has found that more liberal political views are positively correlated with IQ. By the way, IQ is also negatively correlated with religiosity, and atheists do indeed have higher average IQ's than do the religious. So yes, to sum up, atheists are smarter than religious people (big shock #2). Kanazawa theorizes that liberal political attitudes -- basically actually caring about people who aren't related to you -- is evolutionary recent, and as such would be correlated with the increase in IQ that has occurred during the course of human evolution. Much the same is true of not naively ascribing natural events to magical beings. As far as different races are concerned, I would expect that this wouldn't hold for blacks, given their historical allegiance to the Democratic Party. I doubt this would be shocking to too many people, and will be unbelievable (unacceptable) for others, but these are the facts. I will note two caveats in the data: the Add Health data looked at the IQ of adolescents, and IQ measurements are not completely unreliable in children. Also, I would imagine that political orientations would also have yet to mature at that age, and may well continue to shift somewhat throughout life. However, as IQ, religiosity and political orientation are all highly heritable, the correlation is significant. Kanazawa's paper on the matter, "Why Liberals and Atheists Are More Intelligent". |
