They don't overlap...they all have their own zip codes, they are official boundaries.But that said, yes, if you don't know the geography, some of Long Island's names don't make sense. Speaking of Islip, I may as well use that as an example.... If just using the South Shore, you have West Islip, Islip, and East Islip. "East Islip" is east of "Islip", so that makes sense, But to make things confusing, where would you think "West Islip" is? Wouldn't you say, "West of Islip"? Well you would be wrong, you first have to go through Bayshore and Brightwaters, which are west of Islip. THEN you will come to "West Islip" which is next to Babylon....... Now where do you think "Central Islip" is? Well it's not in the middle of any of the Islips on the South Shore, it's north of them..... And then of course, you also have Islip Terrace. And please let's not confuse any of these Islip names with the vast Town of Islip, which encompasses all of them, and also includes Oakdale, Bayport, Sayville, Great River, Bohemia, parts of Ronkonkoma, and many other hamlets and villages. Did I confuse you yet????? :) |
