While we're on the topic of highways, why can't New York City use the mile marker/exit number system that everyone else uses?

It isn't just New York City; sequential exit numbering is predominant in the whole fried-chicken-and-broken-glass liberal northeast. Fear not; numbering based on mile marker is slated to become mandatory by 2019.
