I finished the book Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin this afternoon. The evil was visceral but until one learns of the emotional and psychological terror one cannot fully understand... and even then.I have studied in depth the Rwandan genocide that spoke of mindless if not indiscriminate slaughter. There are countless similar episodes scattered throughout history and, as I type, the present is already the past. Bloodlands shed light on the humanity, something Stalin and Hitler were incapable of feeling. The book was difficult to read - I choose to remember the victims. |
