No big surprise there. The Al Smith dinner is put together to benefit Catholic Charities supporting children of various needs within the Archdiocese of New York. Since her stance on abortion flies in the face of Catholic doctrine, her absence could be explained that way.
Note, this is not a justification, just an excuse .
