It's more a simple statistic. Blue states for the most part have higher populations than red states. So a 75/25 blue state has more conservatives than a 75/25 red state has liberals.

As for why Republicans aren't screeching about the EC, it's because the very definition of conservative is to either not change things, or revert to the older versions of things. The EC is as old as it gets as far as US history is concerned, so there's no "more conservative" position to take. There's no reason to strategize, abolishing the EC would violate a core principle even if it would be beneficial.
