Sam Houston refused to swear loyalty to the Confederacy after Texas' secession, which happened against his wishes, and consequently was removed from office.

Note that he did not do it out of loyalty to the Union, but out of practicality, as he knew that the North would win.

Regardless, he eschewed treason against the United States, and for that he should be honored.
