The Gulf of Tonken incident (LBJ's excuse for a massive buildup) ocurred in 1968. That's when Vietnam burst into the front page headlines.

The Vietnam era was the beginning of the "If it bleeds, it leads" system of TV news that persists to this day. By 1970 the networks were bringing war in all it's bloody glory into America's living rooms in full color.

Joe Sixpack was soured and looking around for somebody to blame. Johnson decided (wisely) not to run for a second term.

I suspect that when all this was going on, both of us had other things on our minds.
