I suspect that's what really sparked the "If it bleeds, it leeds" attitude in TV news. It's actually a outgrowth of Walter Winchell's style. His "tabloid" approach to his radio and TV programs was the seed that grew todays "yellow jounalism" style.As to television in general, nobody ever said it better than MAD Magazine: "The average American has a forty year old body and a five year old mind. If he watches television for a full year, he will have a forty-one year old body and a four year old mind." It's not called the "Idiot Box" for nothing. |
