5800-5949 & some GMC buses that were used after the Grumman Flexible buses were off the streets.

Posted by Chicago44 on Tue Jan 11 09:59:37 2022

Did NYC Transit lease 150 Greyhound MCI 5850-5949 (150) buses right after the Grumman Flexible buses were taken off the streets in 1984.

If so, how many were sent to Castleton & Yukon Depots or were they leased before the Grumman Flexible buses were taken off the streets, if they weren't released before or for a little while after the Grumman Flexible buses were taken off the streets, what express buses were used for Staten Island service.

Finally, I did see some pictures of some lease buses 01115 & 01122, did NYC Transit lease these buses after the Grumman Flexible buses were taken off the streets or before that, if so, how many did Castleton & Yukon Depots receive, where were they lease from, what were there numbers & how many were lease.

If anyone out there have pictures of these lease Greyhound & GMC buses that NYC Transit use, please post them or if there is a website, please post that up along with MCI 5950 that was lease from Academy Tours.

Didn't we borrow a lot of buses from Washington DC?

Yup! 5800-5949 were ex-Greyhound MC-8 that had gone to Hausman Bus sale for resale when NYCTA leased them. All of them went to SI division. I remember lots at Yukon, but I'm sure Castleton had some as well. The TA also sent out (to Blitz) 350 GMC new look buses to be rebuilt

Yes, the TA also leased WMATA new look buses, but this was earlier while the Grumman 870s were being repaired. Most were GMC, but there were some Flxibles as well.

Originally the Grumman 870, after that company unloaded Flxible onto General Automotive Corporation that model became the Flxible Metro.

Grumman had owned Flxible from 1978 to 1983. So for both reasons, hence the term.

Prior to Grumman, Flx was owned by Rohr from about 1972. This when Pres. Nixon wanted the aerospace companies to get involved in mass transit. In 1972, the gov't, in conjunction with UMTA, held Transpo '72 at Dulles Airport in DC, which brought on board companies like Rohr, Boeing Vertol and others. It was an interesting period.

Cool! I loved riding those WMATA buses. I'd basically stalk them on AMS routes. FFS was the other OA depot that had them.

I was always sure that SI Express riders probably got spoiled by those MC-8s, especially since that was the time in which local buses were often used for express service. I also though it was cool that the TA made destination sign rolls for the smaller curtain on the MC-8.

Sure was.
I really liked the design of most of "transbus models.
The GMC RTX was a real beauty..EXCEPT for the ranked back
end cap.
The Rohr model was lower flooring and lower profiled to make boarding easier...much like today's models.

Didn't NYCTA also rent/lease buses from Domenico Tours for the Staten Island Express routes during this time to help out?

MAybe no photos exists or anyone who still posts here don't have any! Stuff back then wasn't as well documented like today. That's why there's far more photos of the Nova RTS compared to the GMC RTS for example. You'd be hard pressed to find photos of GMC RTS on the express bus routes for example, and that was an regular assignment that lasted for serveral years.

I remember this ..a bit. I lived near the B3 Ulmer Park route. We had buses from all over to help with the Grumman 870 shortage. RTS buses came from FLA and older buses were placed in service.
The Washington Buses were assigned in Manhattan and Staten Island. I dont think any of them went to Brooklyn or Queens.

Coliseum in the Bronx did not get the borrowed DC buses either. They used older Fishbowls and New Looks. I remember on the lightly used Bx22 and Bx23 there was a Fishbowl express bus used to make service.

Assigned in Manhattan but did run into the Bronx in Riverdale on the M100.

I was living in L. A. back then (where SCRTD had a Grumman crisis on a smaller level (only 230 compared to NY's 500 or 600)), but was in NY in mid-August. I think I rode a WMATA Flxible in Manhattan.
