I have just vague memories of this time as I was just 7/8 y/o. I do remember it as I remember seeing trains on the old 3rd Ave el, and of course the brand spanking new GMC T6H-5309As that replaced it with Bx-55 service. |

I don't know for sure, but I'd doubt any A/C system from the 1960s could still work today. And since the types of refrigerant used have changed several times since then (environmental reasons), I don't think a 50 or even 25 year old A/C can be fixed- it would have to be replaced. So while there may well be Fishbowl buses in collections with working A/C, I think it would not be the same system. What it might sound like, I won't try to guess :) |

Obviously, I couldn't say for sure, but I was also certain those Flxibles never came to MABSTOA. I think he extent of them being in OA territory would've been on the Q44, and possibly the Brooklyn local routes that entered lower Manhattan |

Seeing the MaBSTOA lists dating to 1970 onward, 3357 from the 1963 order had been put out of commission permanently at some point between 1966 and 1970 because on that and subsequent bus roster lists (1/73 and 1/74) it was not on the list and there was a break between 3356 and 3358. |

I think some of the buses in the 3601-3950 batch, when first delivered in '63, did do some service in MAN (a photo from "back then" that had been on eBay showed it parked on the eastern end of the run of the then M-3 49th-50th Crosstown route - and it was before a side rollsign was put in) next to the standee windows. Certainly one of the 500 series from 1960 had done duty on the M-15 First and Second Avenues line as of 1961. Makes me wonder why (besides the Old Look holdovers) none of the 1964 or '65 Flxies saw at least some Manhattan service before being strewn about Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. |

Also . . . it seems it was around the time of QV's opening that the last seven of the first OA Flxibles from 1969 (4721-4727) were transferred to Hudson depot in Manhattan, thus those buses truly penetrated into Manhattan for the first time (apart from some Bx- buses assigned out of depots where they had been stored up to that point). |

I rode them often and mainly on KB routes. KB had a bunch of them (8301-8371), and occasionally on Manhattan routes where the rest of them for OA (8372-8780) were scattered at the OA depots.I do remember that the bus operators would often turn off the A/C when climbing the steep hills in the west Bronx. |

There is a very steep climb on Lexington Avenue between 103rd and 102nd Streets which I'm sure, the A/C batwings (upper 8400's up to 8545) plying the M101 and M101A/M102 routes would have had the A/C turned off when approaching that area. I am of the age where, if I'm in the area, I try to avoid that specific stretch, instead walking down Third or Madison or Fifth. When the OA batwings first turned up, only 12th Street out of which 12 - Spring/Delancey and 14 - 14th Street Crosstown were assigned (as was 13 - 8th Street Crosstown until about 1968 when it was shifted to 54th), didn't get any; but seven (8452-8458) were reassigned from Amsterdam in 1972 when the Hudson depot opened and put there. |

Their sheer weight, plus passengers. In my car I can feel extra drain on the engine when the A/C is on, but it's not too bad. My 2007 Honda Accord is quite a runner as it has a 3.0 V6 engine with 244 bHP and 6-speed manual tranny.I still remember (fondly) a few years ago when I drove it through the mountains along I-68 in Western MD, WV and it was able to maintain speed on those long inclines without me downshifting. A/C on too. |

With a V6 and manual transmission, I can see that this would be no problem.Although not on the topic of A/C or even buses anymore, my 4-cyl 2009 Hyundai Sonata (I came to consider it a total POS) had trouble stopping with the A/C on- totally drained power from the power brakes. I just bought my 2018 Nissan Altima a few weeks ago. While I'm pleased so far, nothing has arisen yet to really put it to the test- no steep hills, no serious traffic, no extremely hot or cold weather. As a Manhattan commuter, I basically don't drive at all Monday-Thursday- and only a little on Friday nights. A few weekends away upstate or in New England will tell us what we've really got here. Assuming you're referring to the GMC T6H-5305As (8800-8933, 4300-4499)... Yes, those were indeed TA-only buses. I have seen a photo of 8802 on OA's very short lived Bx56 Culture Bus Loop III, but I imagine it and any others went back to TA when this route was discontinued. |

The '64 (5001-5165) and '65 Flxibles (5601-5790) were also TA only.Technically, I guess the same for '59-62 GMCs, but unlike with the later buses OA didn't exist until 1962 so it's first new buses were the '63 GMCs 3301-3555. |

What was mentioned was what was reprinted in an MTA guide as on eBay. The reassignation of some of the OA T6H-5309A's must've happened after that guide was printed. |

If anyone bids on that '78 book - can anyone say which of the 5001-5165 and 5601-5790 Flxibles, if any, were at MAN (126th Street-2nd Avenue) depot?By '78 all the buses OA inherited from FACL, ST et al., were retired, and what was left of the 3301-3555 OA's from '63 were also, as noted, "dead" in storage. |
