Posted by Gold_12th on Sat May 17 11:54:59 2014 Jones Beach 2014 Summer ServiceService to Jones Beach via the n87 from Hicksville and the NON-STOP n88 from Freeport Nice Bus offers 2 routes to Jones Beach beginning Memorial Day Weekend, 2014. 1. The Non-stop n88 departing from Freeport LIRR station to the Jones Beach State Park's two Bathhouses and the Central Mall. 2. Weekend Service Only. Daily service begins June 23rd. 3. Departure times from Jones Beach denotes a West Bathhouse departure. 4. Buses departing from Freeport LIRR station may be held at the discretion of supervisors, to enable transfers arriving from LIRR trains. 5. Bus Service runs rain or shine The n87 service begins Monday June 23rd, departing from Hicksville LIRR to Jones Beach Bathhouses and Central Mall, with stops at Newbridge Road, East Meadow, and Wantagh. After Wantagh, the n87 services Freeport and then on to the beach. Weekend-Only service from Freeport begins Saturday, May 24th, Memorial Day Weekend thru June 23th. Daily service from both Freeport and Hicksville starts on Monday June 23rd, and runs thru Labor Day, September 1st. The one-way cash fare is $2.25. The MetroCard and NICE GOMOBILE app fare is $2.50. The columns are labeled in a very confusing way. It the top should read Leave Freeport, Arrive Jones Beach.The second column should read Leave Jones Beach, Arrive Freeport. From Freeport, To Jones Beach means exactly the same thing. |

You mean round-trip? Because Google Maps says it takes about 10 minutes each way to make it from Wantagh to Freeport, and then after you leave, the travel time to reach Jones Beach should be comparable from Freeport vs. Wantagh.As a side benefit, it's a nice shortcut for anybody who needs to travel from Hicksville to Freeport. |

A car may be able to make it ten minutes between Wantagh and Freeport but I doubt a bus can make it. I'd expect the Meadowbrook Parkway to be more crowded than the Wantagh Parkway because the Meadowbrook is closer to the city.I don't have passenger load counts on the N87. If the bus is 2/3 full leaving Wantagh, is it worth it to pick a third at Freeport and inconvenience the 2/3 already on the bus? |

The bus can pick up passengers at Bellmore and Merrick train Stations. By the time the bus gets to Freeport, there will barely be room for anybody else.I don't know how NICE blocks the N87, but I remember Mid-Island would send a bus to JB and then deadhead back to Hicksville. Now NICE wants to send a bus Freeport. |

I cannot judge the quality of service by less that two hours of observation. N87 and N88 are supposed to leave Jones at :00 and :30. Both take the Meadowbrook Pkwy to Freeport, but the trips leaving Jones at :30 continue from Freeport to Wantagh and Hicksville, as described above.--- Today,7.10.2014, as I approached the water tower, I was surprised to see a bus leave Jones at 4:20. The next left at 4:50. I explored to the Field 5 stop, then returned to the Central Mall (at the Water Tower) at 5:15 and found passengers waiting. The next bus came at 5:59, as shown in the photo below. That was at least a 45 minute wait, more probably 70 minutes. The destination sign said Hicksville LIRR and some passengers were reluctant to board until I announced "This goes to Freeport." ---

I am surprised the N87 Hcksville route was changed. It used to run via the the Wantagh Parkway from Jones Beach to Wantagh, then normal route to Hicksville. Now it follows the N88 Freeport route and then to Wantagh then Hicksville. This makes more sense. Also, I see the frequency is hourly room around 1pm to 8 pm. It used to be 3 trips daily. Great improvement in service. |

No improvement in service. The 87 runs habitually late due to insufficient running time & never leaves Freeport on time. It also gets delayed because some of the 87 runs are interlined with other routes that run late into either Freeport or Hicksville. |

Last year, N87 buses I saw had only 3 or 4 people on the entire bus.Meanwhile, N88 buses were so packed that people were in danger of being left behind. The vast majority of people using mass transit go to Freeport and then transfer to buses/LIRR to go towards Queens/NYC. |
