M15 SBS Tuesday's rush hour.... lots of criticism

In one report, people waited more then 20 minutes for the M15 SBS to show instead of 5 minutes that MTA advertised on the Guide-A-Ride boxes on Tuesday. MTA is addressing the issue, yeah right.

This video shows a lot of frustrated people on the M15 SBS...

Lay the critics to rest....Just like Bx12 SBS, it takes time for people NOT used to the system to get use to it and it takes time for the operation to smooth out.

Me personally, I won't grade this until at least after the first 30 days! NO ONE can expect 100% smoothness on a new operation in the first week or first month for that matter...

if stretch limos showed up and took people for free, someone would bitch

will there be more farebeating? i am sure there will but people wil get where they need to be faster meaning more people may take the bus meaning more revenues (ok that was a stretch lol)

the only other option i see is what i saw in some places in germany - another person at the back of the bus to watch you swipe your card.

bottom line is that if nyc is going to grow, the buses need to be way more efficient esp since that 2nd ave subway will never arrive

However, during the midday today, buses were arriving at the South Ferry loop in bunches of 5, 6, and 8.

The SBS bus lane makes a great bike lane

This evening around 6pm I biked down Second Ave from 59 St to 10 St in the brown bus lane. In the 15-20 minutes I was there, I didn't see an SBS bus at all, neither behind me nor ahead; I passed one local bus. At several of the SBS stops, there were transit personnel explaining the system to riders.

There were three lane blockages: at 48 St, a car with diplomat plates was parked in the lane (with the driver present); at 47 St, a Mercedes with regular plates was letting people out with the trunk open; at 32 St there was a police car sitting in the lane.

With such a high-profile introduction, you'd think that route supervisors would be out making sure the buses arrived as per schedule.

It seemed that at the SBS stops, the SBS portion of the stop is at one end of the block and the local bus portion is at the other, unlike the Limited stops, which were shared exactly with the local buses. So besides not knowing whether to buy a ticket if you can use either the SBS or local bus, you also don't know where to stand.

Somewhere along the way, I noticed that an official bike lane has been installed on the left-hand side of Second Avenue, but I was doing too well in the bus lane to move over. Does anyone know where exactly the bus lane begins and ends?

They did even fixed a lot of issues in Bx12 SBS still.

Its going to be bumpy ride for M15 SBS especially the traffic in the construction of SAS, bridges and tunnel entrances and the UN when ever there is a meeting; also the marathon coming soon.

What is causing these buses to bunch up in such a bad way? Even in the video, the lady mentioned that local buses were flying by as she sat and waited for the SBS.

Interesting, the concern about the "separation" of SBS and Local Fares. Rather than running like the subway, where you can take the local in case the express is running horridly, you are basically resigned to taking the SBS unless you have an unlimited pass. I wonder if that came up a bit with the Bx12.

Hopefully things smooth out soon as people get used to the new operation.

It's nothing new with bunching on the 15 - it's called traffic through two of the busiest thoroughfares in Manhattan.

Add to that the construction on 2nd Avenue and you have your problem right there.

Travel times will be faster - but these are still buses...which means they will be subject to traffic conditions.

I noticed that too - locals were leaving at pretty even intervals a block away from my vantage point (which was the South Ferry bus loop).

There are no SBS stops at St. Marks/9th St. and Chrystie/Houston. Going downtown, the next stop after 14th St./Second Av. is Allen/Houston. IMO, losing the St. Marks stop both ways is a big no no and should be reconsidered and let's see what Whole Foods and Avalon residents are going to say about losing Chrystie/Houston.

I can understand the traffic excuse if all the buses are late. But how do you explain the local buses getting through and the SBS getting stuck in traffic? Doesn't make sense.

Chrystie/Houston, definitely. It's in front of a park/playground.

St. Marks is little bit more trickier but there's no sidewalk café tables on the southbound side and if they have room to install MUNI meter machines, why not?

BTW I noticed the southbound St. Marks stop has a timetable for the SBS service even though it doesn't stop there. I haven't checked the northbound stop yet.

One good thing I can say about this new service. My wife leaves early in the morning so there isn't much change at that time when there isn't much traffic, but her evening commute back home from Wall St. has become much quicker. Before, every bus below Houston was local, now it's only four stops.

Yesterday I walked around the southbound Allen/Houston stop where the machines are setup in front of stores. If they can do that, St. Marks both ways can have them.
