Fixed coding, my bad.We have had to open roof hatches on SEPTA buses many times in the summer b/c the A/C failed. It's called shit happens, it could also happen on a train. Trains are more comfortable and have their place in transit. Buses are needed other places. It's called a balance. We have that in life. Nothing is perfect. Let me add this: I had an Advertising professor at Drexel tell us, "Nothing gives a smoother ride that steel on steel". Professor C.J. Culbert was right. But you can't lay rails everywhere, so on came the bus. Plus the debate about the destruction of the trolley system. Now cities are getting smart and reviving light rail, some putting back rails and wire they already had and destroyed, IIRC. Like trains, streetcars, LRV's , trolleybuses and buses. They all have a place in our systems. Shit happens..... |

With all due respect, the points that Terrapin Station made are the thoughts of many people in society. There's a reason why people take trains and avoid buses. There's a reason why LRT spurs development and bus lines tend not to. There's a reason why homes near good rail service cost a heck of a lot more than homes that are far away from rail.We are horrendously biased on this board because, well, we happen to like buses. We happen to like the roar of the engine, the style, the bumps (who else in their right mind would ENJOY the fact that they are launched sky high while riding a MACK?), and more. However, many other people don't like them. I remember I was chatting with an avid railfan about Silverliner IVs and SEPTA stuff. I mentioned "El Dorados". He asked, "what's that?" I say, "a type of bus." His reply? "Ew." His point of view is shared by many, unfortunately. Fact of the matter is, in inclement weather, buses tend to be much less reliable than trains. Oh well, that's a fact of life. At the same time, if a train breaks down in, let's say, a tunnel or an el, its a bit less convenient to get off than a broken down bus. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, regardless how close to live to one mode or the other. Let's agree to disagree and stop these stupid threads about pwnage (that's so last decade ^_^) and talk about other stuff regarding transit! This really isn't a good way to start a new decade... |

Before I post my response to you. If you already see this message from Mr Mabstoa already, skip it, go below it to response that I quote to you.________________________________________________________ Brian Weinberg's comments on "buses suck". Read Mr. Mabstoa says.... http://www.subchat.com/buschat/read.asp?Id=179973 "it didn't suck anywhere nearly as much as riding buses any time of day does." --- from Brian Weinberg "So all the time you spent in December on 42 Street obsessing over the vintage buses really sucked? Why were you out there everyday then? You did something you really hated everyday? WEIRD!" --- from Mr. Mabstoa So, tell me is Terrapin Station is right or wrong? _______________________________________________________ For your posts: "With all due respect, the points that Terrapin Station made are the thoughts of many people in society. There's a reason why people take trains and avoid buses. There's a reason why LRT spurs development and bus lines tend not to. There's a reason why homes near good rail service cost a heck of a lot more than homes that are far away from rail." - I think Weinberg has a faulty logic. There are still lots of areas dont have rail service. Yet buses already serve them. Trains and buses shared the same faults except they have advantages which we already know. "We are horrendously biased on this board because, well, we happen to like buses. We happen to like the roar of the engine, the style, the bumps (who else in their right mind would ENJOY the fact that they are launched sky high while riding a MACK?), and more. I say, "a type of bus." His reply? "Ew." His point of view is shared by many, unfortunately." - Of course, I am not disagree with your response. Except Weinberg wrote, "buses suck"... means every thing about buses sucks? He just doesnt get it at all. That is why I posted my replies to him. He probably avoids it because those responses that I wrote are mostly true. "Fact of the matter is, in inclement weather, buses tend to be much less reliable than trains. Oh well, that's a fact of life. At the same time, if a train breaks down in, let's say, a tunnel or an el, its a bit less convenient to get off than a broken down bus. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, regardless how close to live to one mode or the other." Yes its true. "Let's agree to disagree and stop these stupid threads about pwnage (that's so last decade ^_^) and talk about other stuff regarding transit!" - Not unless Brian Weinberg need his BRAIN SURGERY since HE BADLY needs it. "This really isn't a good way to start a new decade..." - Of course, its not a good start. Look at last year's flamewar with Brian wanted to threaten someone's life. Wow, that was some fireworks back then. |

Very well said.I will admit that I am amongst those who generally avoids buses except as a last resort. I do not pretend to be a mass transit fan - I am primarily a RAIL fan (there is a difference). So given a choice between a bus and my car, I will always choose my car. On the other hand if trolleys made a comeback in NYC, I would eagerly use that mode! For me buses will always be the evil that replaced my beloved trolley :) Having said this I find myself gaining an appreciation for the older buses, particularly the "GM Old Look" and other pre-1960 era vintage. I guess it goes along with my attraction to vintage automobiles as well as 1940's/1950's retro styling. We all have different interests and different reasons for being involved in this hobby - there is no right or wrong. Lets enjoy it and Happy New Year to all. |

Ok, but you don't have to keep saying "buses suck" on a bus fan's message board. You can feel that way or you can have your reasons why you prefer trains over buses, but to keep stating that "buses suck" on a frequent basis is both juvenile and annoying. If you notice, both BMTLines and Flxible Neofan made their points without resorting to using derogatory comments. |

If yoy don`t like buses then why don`t you just stay away from BusChat. We all here like them, sure we may diasagree on which models we like better but that`s only natural. You could go on; surprised you haven't. All these things are subject to the factors governing the design/operation of the bus, which in and of itself does not suck. Consider operations outside of the NYCTA realm. Operations where buses DO run on schedule; where passengers pay with coins/ tokens or with a fare card system superior to ours; where a shelter is a shelter. So your quote, my rebuttal: "In fact they suck more because they have no trains to ride instead: Not the fault of the bus, per se. "buses suck because you usually have to wait outside for them". How about "el" stations and in general, railroad platforms. "...they are at the mercy of other surface traffic and thus never run on schedule and are always late" Yeah, like 'we're being held because of train traffic ahead; we should be moving shortly'. "they place high g-forces on the riders bodies when they accelerate and stop and turn and there's no good way to hold on usually so it's very uncomfortable" How about derailments. "they get stuck in traffic all the time" All the time? You ride that many buses so often you can make that claim? "you never know when they are going to come" Sure; just like the subway always runs on time. They (NYCTA) prints worthless schedules to placate a "dumb" general public. And we won't even touch Amtrak's 'on time' performance. Notorious! A joke. "there's no way to buy a metrocard" Not the fault of m"buses" per se. Not all systems use metrocards and / or have fare collections superior to ours. "it can be way too hot in there and the windows may be stuck or out of reach" No such thing as A/C failure on a train. Geeze, get real. "people don't move to the back..." They don't move into the car; they hover around doors. "there's no destination or route signs on the driver's side" This I'll give you; white books specs was supposed to alleviate this. My argument too. "the drivers can pretend they don't see you and drive away" Conductors closing doors in people's faces. "they splash people standing at the curb, they make you step through puddles and snow to get to them if the driver doesn't pull up to the curb" Sometimes necessary. Again, do you see each bus on every run, in every city? "their mirrors can whack people" Personal experience? Note the plethora of law suits here. "their motors make the whole back of the bus vibrate uncomfortably" Sit in the front. Older generations of buses were far worse, yet you spent a heck of a lot of time chasing them. Did you not ride becuase of vibrating engines? Your loss! "they bunch up - making one bus SRO and another bus virtually empty along the same route at the same time, buses get in other bus's way" Not at all like standing on the platform and several trains come along except the one we are waiting for. Columbus Circle with three (A) trains and two (B) trains before a solidly packed (D)trundles in. Look again kiddo. "they don't pull into bus stops when there are several other buses already there, when they are out of service they take up space in bus stops forcing the in-service buses to stop behind them and making the passengers walk further to their destinations" Operations problems; not a general fault of the medium. "there's no prominent interior route and destination signs" I agree there. With your general disdain of people why are you so concerned about their discomforts? Or are you thinking of yourself? No surprises here. |

Joe, keep in mind that Brian also prefers driving an automobile into Manhattan on Sundays as opposed to riding public transportation. One of his excuses was that it's more convenient if he's shopping, and has large or cumberosome purchases. If someone has a car, isn't it easier to drive to the suburbs where there are acres upon acres of ample free parking, as opposed to endlessly circling the block waiting for a good space, or getting tickets for triple parking on 8th Avenue somewhere? Brian also mentioned that he loves to drive. Maybe in a demolition derby, because that's what I compare driving in New York to (or any big city, for that matter). If someone loves to drive, they should be driving on a smooth winding and hilly country road, like you see in car commercials on TV. Not on Henry Hudson Parkway, a road poorly designed for anything bigger than a motorcycle, or on city avenues swerving around taxis, potholes, gypsy cabs, and buses and slamming on the brakes when the traffic lights turn red every other block. |

And why drive into Manhattan at all; go north east (yuk) or west! There's a whole world out there, but once again, old TS can't see past the end of his nose. |

The thing that gets me is that he grew up in Scranton, Pa., and went to college in Ithaca, N.Y. You would think that he would hate driving in NYC after living in places like that. Although, the Scranton area is nothing to write home about. An old and depressing town. Maybe that's why he loves driving in Manhattan! :-) |

And both Scranton and EYE-thaca are bus dependent towns. He's not old enough to remember trolley systems; they went out long before he was thought up.EYE suppose all those things he ranted on about in an earlier post happened to him or his folks. Still, no excuse. I know people hit by cars or in car accidents, yet they don't hate cars. "There is none so blind as he who will not see." |

The dips and curves and on ramps and off ramps! I rip that thing up! I just drove it this evening! Zoom zoom! I love it!!! |

No, I love driving so much from living in those places that I can't live without it. Hence I make the best I can here in the city and drive as much as possible. |
