A tunnel to Brooklyn would not be as successful as a tunnel directly from SI to Manhattan; if a tunnel were to be built, this is how it should be.

Any express bus thread is always turned into an "Eliminate the express bus thread". The fact remains that the subway doesn't go everywhere and there are people who simply don't want to use a filthy system with overcrowded trains that crawl during rush hour.

If the SI buses were divided into Lower Manhattan and Midtown lines then going thru either NJ or the BQE to SI at a central hub to take the subroutes, then there would be no problems in terms of getting a seat as then frequency would be even for at least in Manhattan.

But then again "no one wants to make an additional transfer" :sigh:

Recently, I found myself becoming a more frequent rider of the X10 and X30 because of the inconsistencies of the SI Local buses. If the local buses are late (occurs all too often), then I get to the ferry late, miss the boat and immediately set back 15-30 minutes.

I've become very accustomed to using the express buses though especially on weekends when the subways are compounded with G/Os. I wouldn't say that the express buses are a godsend because they become SRO during rush hours, and easily get caught in traffic but all this crap about express buses need to be eliminated is BS. Unless you live close to the ferry, the express buses are usually your best bet when traveling to/from SI and the city.

From New Springville, the trip to Midtown on the x17J is ~90 minutes. The same trip by local bus (s91 is scheduled for 53 minutes from the Mall to the Ferry) and ferry (~25 minutes) is 80-90 minutes just to the Battery. I would have to leave home at least 30 minutes earlier than I now do to make it to work on-time.

Thats interesting.
I know this is not SI I am saying here however I want to say it.
I tend to find Express Buses to be faster depending on where I am going. At certain times of the day and a lot of times on the weekend its faster for me to go to 34th St by Express Bus then the subway. The break even point would be like around 42 St. I would not save much time if I am going north of 42nd. Most of the time heading back to Queens it can be faster with the Express Bus regardless where you get on depending on how you time it. Also from where I am at to Lower Manhattan it's faster to take the QM1 Downtown then to take a local bus and 2 trains. One of the reasons why the QM1 Downtown is very well used is b/c it's the fastest way to go Downtown from Fresh Meadows and along the Union Turnpike corridor. Another reason is because there's no direct subway line from Queens Blvd that go's downtown and also because taking a bus to the J line tends to take a long time. Like who wants to take a Q30 from Douglaston all the way to Jamaica and transfer to the J or Z to go downtown while they can get there in lesser time by transferring over to the QM1 Downtown at Union Turnpike (Q30 or QM1A).
My main gripe about the QM1 Downtown is that about 20-30% of the riders drive over to the QM1 Downtown (with most of the people driving to fresh meadows from points east). I don't understand why can't there be a Park N Ride lot in Fresh Meadows. The only place in Fresh Meadows thats big enough to make it into a like a 200-300 car lot is Cunningham Park however I would see a lot of NIMBY's against it (and some of those NIMBY's are the ones that would drive to Fresh Meadows for the QM1 Downtown). MTA can use some of the current parking spots at the 2 shopping centers right at the 1st stop of the QM1 Downtown.

For places like SI, they need express buses, but rather than to have all their branches go to Manhattan, they should have all the buses on SI meet at some central hub and then riders can catch a bus going to either LM or Midtown. That way bus service to Manhatttan would be consistant and riders would have frequent/evenly distributed service.

Well the transfer would be inconvenient, but it doesn't mean it would have to take away a transfer [bus transfer cards would be issued when the person gets on the bus].
As you said the X18 and X20 'takes up space', but if a manhattan only bus was running then riders would be evenly distributed among all Manhattan bound/leaving buses so the X1 and X17 won't be so crowded.
This way only Manhattan buses runs as many buses that is needed so they won't be overcrowded or underused.

If the subways worked the way it's supposed to then you wouldn't need express buses.
