Express runs by and large are unproductive. A packed house one way, an empty house the other way. Sometimes a bus goes in service on an early trip toward Manhattan and has to d/h back for the next trip later in the same rush. Zero dollars in the fare box. Here is where the balancing act comes in. Maybe the d/h'ing bus arrives late due to heavy reverse commuting traffic. As it is, express buses are big time money losers. Ever since the first fishbowl express bus from SI ran in the late 1960's, an uncontrollable and unproductive monster was created which NYCT cannot kill. Too bad because the extinction of express buses, something that will never happen due to political pressures, would hold down the deficit and put resources where they could be used more efficiently.
