I don't live on Staten Island; I live on Long Island where there is adequate LIRR service, at least in my area (SW part of Nassau). But I can sympathize. One issue not mentioned is historical. When the VZ bridge was designed (1957-59), rail tracks were specifically excluded thanks to Robert Moses, who was pro-auto and anti-transit. Today all New Yorkers live with his short-sighted legacy.

The BMT could have accessed the VZ bridge by building a spur off of the Sea Beach Line (today's N) that would follow the Gowanus Expressway r.o.w. onto the bridge. Once on Staten Island the SI Railway could have been used. Many Staten Islanders would have had rail access to Manhattan, something sorely lacking today and probably never to happen. Buses would not have been the only means for a one-vehicle ride to/from Manhattan. What a shame.
