Too bad, the images on that websit is too damn small, should have put in a pdf format.

Why can the MTA put the Neighborhood maps on the map page?

Here is a tarball of neighborhood maps that have been posted here before (IIRC by Spider-pig).

This should be pretty straightforward to extract on any modern Linux distro. Otherwise:

Instructions for Linux/Unix/Mac/other vaguely standard operating systems:

1) Save the file to your home directory.
2) Open a terminal window.
3) Type:
cd ~
tar -zxvf nhmaps.tar.gz
exit

Instructions for Windows:

1) Use a Linux live CD.
2) Follow instructions for vaguely standard operating systems, modifying the path to wherever you can save the tarball.
3) Curse Bill Gates for writing such a non-compatible disaster.

I didn't realize that you wanted electronic ones. I don't think you are going to find current ones in Acrobat. The MTA only posts the updated Lower Manhattan one. I downloaded some of the Acrobat versions that were linked to in this thread in tarball compression before the uncompressed versions were taken offline, but they, of course, are outdated. Italianstallion pointed out the one that the Unified Court System uses to show its Brooklyn courthouses, but I don't think there are any others out there. I did a Google search a couple of years ago, but found just the UCS one. And, the MTA's printed ones are very costly. Keep in mind that many of the ones posted in stations are outdated, so the Tar folder may not be all that bad.

Perhaps it is time for NYC and Company to contract with the MTA to publish all of the neighborhood maps both electronically and in book form. Seeing New York, 2010, anyone?

Or perhaps it is time for a public agency to make PDF versions of this important customer information available on their website.

I seem to recall that the original neighborhood map PDF's were yanked from the MTA website in the initial post-9/11 paranoia, but the fact that they are now willing to sell highly-detailed copies puts the lie to that excuse.

Actually, they were put up immediately following 9/11 to help people get around lower Manhattan and find alternate travel routes. I think they lasted almost a year before getting taken down.

It's important that people remember the paranoia machine didn't start to kick in until a few months later; the younger generation which is now on the internet can only go by secondhand tales. From what I remember I saw many railfans taking pictures the few days after 9/11 of R46 Qs on the Brighton, Js at 95st Bkln and the R40 slant / R68 Qs on Queens Blvd, and heard nothing of photographer harassment until much later. I got some RFW videos on the LIRR and MNRR, including the tunnels, in 2003. In 2003 I remember being able to walk through the Albany capitol building and legislature building without there even being metal detectors present, let alone a full on turnstile and security screening. It was a nice shortcut to Washington Ave from Empire State Plaza in the freezing cold. I feel like the newsstand in the Capitol suffered a sudden drop in customers when people could no longer stop by and grab a newspaper and whatnot on their way through in the morning.

9/11 isn't what caused the "photographer = terrorist" paranoia around the country. It was the railroad bombings in London and Spain a couple years later. When I first moved to NYC in 2003, I never had ANY problems taking photos, videos, etc of anything. After the summer of 2004, everything changed.

Well yeah, we already established that, we knew there was one for Android because that was the subject of this subthread. If you mean one for the poorly designed, distant second OS with its paternalistic 'market' and its susceptibility to bricking at the whim of AT&T or King Jobs, then yeah, I guess it's available. But who really cares? At the rate they're going iOS will make Windows Mobile look popular by the end of next year.
