They can still be used without a tunnel. By extending current electric services, these thing can be used on the NJCL and M&E without any added capacity necessary.

I'm just saying that if the new tunnel is never built, they are not going to run the Raritan trains (or any other diesel lines) into New York , so there will be no need for those things.

I know they could be used, but there would be no need for them if the tunnel is never built. Unless the existing fleet of engines get old and they can use these to take their place anywhere in the system? But then things could get complicated with the fueling situation if they end up staying away from fuel pads for any extended period...who knows?

As far as I know, there's absolutely no room for any more trains into NYC with the existing tunnels, so unless they eliminate some NE Corridor trains, I would say no...

These locomotives will come along, whether they build this tunnel or not. I am quite sure NJT would like to get services beyond Long Branch (NJCL) and Morristown get into Midtown. Better accessibility = better service = happy customers willing to go by rail from "The Sticks" to Midtown Manhattan = $$$$$$, something NJT and the state of NJ need!!

What about turning some Long Branch - Penn Station trains into Bay Head - Penn trains, with the needs for passengers to make transfers at Long Branch lessened?? (Combining in other words)

Hope so too. But I have not heard a whole lot of bad things about the Bombardier jets. Many airlines are now using them as their choice for local, commuter flight routes, including JetBlue, US Airways and American, and Delta.

Eh, they'll just find a way to screw the NEC local, M&E, and NJCL Matawan short turn trains in order to squeeze in a few RVL trains just to keep the upper management looking good for having the 'foresight' to order such 'revolutionary' rolling stock.

Dear god I hope not. The last thing SEPTA needs is to both tie an albatross around their neck by ordering these ungodly dual fail locomotives. It'd be that much worse for them to do so while adding more suburban counties to their service area to further water down the city's representation on the SEPTA board while adding virtually nothing to the system's coffers.

In any event it really doesn't look like the ALP45DP will make it through the 20th St portal and the wires around there. A 14 foot, 6 inch C424 grounded the overhead wire coming through there back in 2005. NJT's dual fails are nearly 15 feet tall, which is much too close for comfort to the overhead wire. Give us wire to Pottstown and Quakertown, or don't bother.

Yes but two of their planes recently made emergency landings with faulty landing gears. Delta at JFK and SkyJet in Detroit I think. But, they said it was a known issue too :(

Well much like they do at Stamford here, where there is no actual on site fuel pad with on-grounds fuel facility, they can have a fuel truck arrive on a preset daily schedule and fuel the engines as needed.

I've never heard of that happening anywhere at NJT. I've only seen the trucks delivering fuel to the pads, never to individual engines. I could be wrong, but since NJT usually f%@&$ up anything that's different than their usual routine, I don't see it happening.

Daily at Stamford Yard, Santa Oil of Bridgeport, CT, delivers and fuels (with employees there to assist) engines during the day. They fuel the Mini-Bombs which get laid up at the yard during the day.

It could be implemented at the discretion of NJT, especially if it is more economical than maintaining a whole fuel facility.

That does not always reflect the builder of the plane, but reflects the levels of maintenance at the owning airline company. Airtran Airways always had some top of the line planes, like new B-737s, B-717s, but they were once cited multiple times by the FAA for piss poor maintenance.

One problem at NJT is getting the "employees to assist". Their 8 hour naps and coffee breaks would be interrupted, so their union would have to get involved... :-)
