Since I'm sitting at home waiting on someone, I'll take a crack at this....1)They have different Cab doors 2)The rollsigns in the front of the R68As sit up higher than the R68s 3)The color patterns on the seats is different between the two. 4)The rollsign box is different on the two cars 5)The seem to have different types of steel? (Like R142 vs R142A..) 6)The car number plates 7)The font on the car number plates 8)The R68s (The ones on the D) are more shiny than an R68A outdoors 9)The inside of the R68s of is brighter than the R68A which is a bit darker... I rode these two car classes commuting for the past two years and these are the things I noticed... |

Not many took up this took up this challenge. But, as promised, here are the differences68 Sign boxes are angled at the bottom. Like this: \_ 68a Sign boxes are squared at the bottom. Like this: L 68 The hole on the sign box, to change signs, is chrome and is not flush. 68a The hole on the sign box is flush and has a simple metal ring. 68 The window that has the sign box in it is comprised of 2 pieces of glass. 68a The window that has the sign box is one piece of glass. 68 Rain gutters on exterior roof line run the entire length of the car. 68a Rain gutters are only over the doors. 68 Window latches have a angled piece of metal over the latch. 68a Window latches have nothing over the latch. 68 Window in the corner cabs have a frame around them. 68a Window in the corner cab is flush mounted 68 Both upper and lower grab rails are joined with fittings. 68a Upper grab rails are joined with fittings. Lower grab rails are welded. 68 Swinging cab door on full with cabs 68a Pocket door on full with cabs. 68 Floor is flat on left side and curved up on right where it meets the cab. This is due to a spec. change during manufacturing as 68s were originally to have corner cabs. 68a Floor is the same on both sides where it meets full width cab 68 Ceiling access panels have no protection against damage from striking grab rails when opened for service. Think chipped paint, 68a Ceiling access panels have small plastic protective overlays where the panel contacts grab rails when open. 68 Steel frame around door access panels panels is wide. 68a Steel frame around door motor access panels is narrow. 68 Interior stainless steel is dull. 68a Interior stainless steel is shiny. 68 Latch that holds end door open is the old flip up style seen in all previous R's. Note, the flip-up part was removed during SMS. Doors can no longer be made to stay open, no issue since end doors are/should be locked. 68a Latch that holds end door open is one piece. I do not know if these have been removed. No issue since end doors are/should be locked. 68 Exterior spot welds are visible. 68a Exterior spot welds not visible. 68 PA speakers in ceiling are in a straight line. Between the lineal diffusers. 68a PA speakers in ceiling are staggered, 1 right, 1 left etc. Still between the lineal diffusers. As far as the front destination sign position mentioned every now and then, that differs even from 68 to 68 depending on date of manufacture. So I do not include it. |

Different sign boxes for side signs.(Bigger on R68As)2. Different window frames (Rubber on R68, Metal on R68A) 3. Different gutters. (Continuous on R68, over doors/CR window only R68A) 4. Different "stripes" (Part of body on R68, separate "patch" on R68A 5. Different front sign placement. (High on R68A, either high with empty box under it or low on R68) 6. Different cab doors. (Swing on R68, Sliding on R68A) 7. Different emergency brake handles. R68 is about twice the size of R68A. 8. R68s have patches over where guard lites would be next to each door. R68As do not. 9. R68s were built with different steel than R68As. R68 is shinier and shows welding more easily. 10. Floor curves up on left side of transverse cab on R68A, while it remains flat on R68. Old differences: 1. R68s had white decals inside when built, (many have since been replaced by standard black ones)R68As have been black from the beginning 2. Prior to the floor replacement program, all R68s had flat floors while R68As had raised bumps at each door (or had black floors). |

I don't care if I win or lose, but here are the differences:R68: -Brighter Stainless Steel. -Different Westinghouse Brake Package meaning stopped smoother, and on the dime where as the R68A had a delayed braking. -Interior Cab Door Swings Inwards Instead Of Sliding -Side Roll Sign interior is not flush as it sticks out, and the Rollsigns are flush to the glass. As well key hole has a stainless steel ring around it. -Numbers on outside numberboards have different number fonts. -Original Rollsigns were smaller, and destination rollsigns usually on each terminal had destination on top of it followed by borough on bottom. -Interior numberboards were aside the Emergency Brake Decal instead of above it like the R68A. -Usually had better acceleration. -End Rollsigns were on the lower R68A low, and the higher R68 high, but also had an extra slot for additional rollsignage, or display boards. On outside of the side rollsign, there was a steel band underneath the rollsign. R68A: -Darker Stainless steel. -Sliding interior cab door. -Side Rollsigns were recessed beyond the glass, and was flush inside with the side walls. -Original side rollsigns had larger font displaying only terminal names, and not boroughs. -Side rollsigns had just the hole for the key to adjust the terminals, and no ring around the hole. -Window where side rollsigns were was whole, and without the divided stainless steel band like the R68 has. End rollsigns just had the higher location. End doors were plain where as the R68 had a decal on it that had "Slide Open with Arrow". -First batch of cars that were linked into 4 car sets, and no singles after transformation. R68's are both in single, and 4 car sets. -Most of the door chimes were not changed as most are original, where as R68's had been changed from time to time. -Lots of the R68's propulsion has that "Jet Noise" coming out of the bearings where as the R68A doesn't. Now, did I give differences between them?????? |
