The train didn't lose that shoe just south of Yonkers station by any chance?

I was on the phone with a friend after 1 AM when there was a huge flash that illuminated the building across the street from me like a lightning strike. Stopped talking for a minute to look and see what happened, but didn't see what caused it, and didn't see your M-8s either.

Just as well - no good could possibly have come from me introducing M-8s into our conversation.

As for the interiors - I'm trying to keep an open mind but my first reaction on seeing your Yonkers platform picture was that the blue tarps were an upgrade over the red and white (cream?) seats I'd previously seen in pictures.

Thanks for the great pictures.

Keep waiting. They won't be running on SLE for a long long time. At least not until Hartford starts getting commuter service. Is that understood, or do we have to keep repeating ourselves???

They have been going on and on about that since I started with MNR in 2004, and you know what, nothing came of it!! I do not anticipate it happening anytime soon!! I am quite sure the Amtrak guys who do the runs would be fightin' mad and fightin' hard with MNR over who runs that service!!

Somewhere between CP 12 and Ludlow, where we were doing our testing. The techs indicated that quite a few of the third rail shoes were not properly adjusted, which resulted in large amounts of arcing, and smoky arcing at that, and the eventual loss of the shoe. If the flash was early Wednesday morning between 2:00 AM and 3:30 AM, then yes it was us, and there was lots of arcing, more than I have ever seen with any train. It was amazing none of the ties started burning, because the arcing was quite smoky, almost enough where the test was close to being called off.

The tarps are applied to protect the seats from the sand and the sand bags, though the seat cushions were removed, and if you look carefully in the interior pics, the seat cushions were stored away in the overhead racks.

And thank you for the compliment, man!! :-) Always a pleasure to share what most do not get to see in this business other than who is on the inside!! :-)

It came really close this past time around, but Amtrak won it. But, with CDOT changing mgmt, we will see what happens. I've advocated for MNR to do the SLE service too as it would be efficient and MNR has the experience from doing the STM to NH portion.

No, actually we did like 6 round trips at scattered locations between CP 12 (Riverdale) and CP 19 (Greystone), and also did 6 "back & forth" moves up and down Ladder F on the Lower Level from Track 107. We had to run with absolute block protection plus Form M authority from GCT (CP 1) all the way to CP 33 (Croton Harmon).

The M8's are being purchased to replace the M2's, NOT to replace the SLE fleet. The VRE cars, the GPs and even the P40s are still in good working condition, so they are only coming off of the SLE service if they are needed to run to Hartford, which isn't going to be anytime in the near future. Furthermore, Westbook (and possibly New London) are going to need a platform upgrade before the M8s can even make a stop there.

Just because the M8s are CAPABLE of running on the 25K catenary (have they been tested over there yet, btw???) doesn't mean they are going to. This is also why there aren't any M7's doing quick turns to Mt Vernon East.

The Terminator zone is actually between Ansonia and Seymour.

I've ridden the Waterbury line twice. The first time was at night (as seen on that DVD), and the second time, a Saturday morning, they only kept the car next to the engine open both ways :(

1926/1973 uses one of the SLE sets, so you'll be getting a GP or P40 AND the VRE coaches!

AFAIK, the M-2/4/6 cannot MU with the M-3As. The M-1As have since been retired, and AFAIK, they could not MU with the M-3As either. Same applies for the M-7As and M-8s.

Randyo......

Dutchrailnut can give more specifics, from an mechanical-knowledge standpoint and get into it in greater detail, but again AFAIK, the Reds and the Blues are no MU-compatible, nor have I know of any consist with them mixed in as such!!

The M-1a could MU with the M-3a but not with the new haven stuff as it has different brake system.
The M1/3 have a stepless P wire system while the M2/4/6 have a British westing house 7 step sytem.
Do the couplers match yes , but electric heads need to be isolated.
The M7-M-8 do have same brake system and could technicaly be coupled

You know, the ends of those cars aren't all that ugly. It just looks like it's the paint that's ugly, at least to me; all the clashing reds and blacks. The windshields for the motorman and fireman are quite large by comparison with older cars, not to mention that there is a fireman's window on these.

It's definitely the paint -- that and the vertical head/tail lights. I wonder is there someone at CDOT that didn't want a red version of the M7?

Awesome pics TMP! For the most part, the train looks great. My only flaw with it is the front look. If the M-8 took the same front design as the M-7A for the exception of the colors, then I'd definitely approve of it. It just looks really funky the way it is now. Any word if MNRR will have an Open House this year?

Thanks, Gary!! :-)

I agree totally about how it should have maintained the M-7A look.

As for the Open House, a big no. No word if there will be one next year either. The belt is being tightened, and the Open House is sadly a casualty.

Thanks for the unfortunate news TMP. I thought they would have one this year because of the new shop opening. I guessed wrong. Seriously, I doubt that the MNRR Open House at Croton-Harmon will ever come back in any capacity. They were enjoyable while they lasted.
IICR, NJT used to have a Try Transit Festival each year. I never made it out for one of those events.

Bee, Paul is right there will be no CH Open House this year.

MNR has not yet ruled out the CH Open House in the future. So there may be hope yet.

I am not sure if the NJT Try Transit Festival is the same one that they have at Hoboken, but they haven't had that one in many years. I went to a few of them. It wasn't really much more than a giant market of train stuff and non train stuff but it was fun to the current operations coming in and out of the terminal. They also at one of the festival had old equipment on display that I liked :)
