I guess someone, somewhere knew I had a longin' to be on one of the test trains for the M-8s!! So with a ring of the phone just about 5 PM yesterday, little ol' me, your friendly, neighborhood #1 Conductor HAPPILY (Yes Railman, with LOTS of foam!!!) answered the call, and at 2200 hours (10:00PM) little ol' me arrived in GCT to have a little road fun WITHOUT the passengers!! The M-8 rolled into GCT from NH at about little after midnight last night, and arrived on Track 107, where after all our briefings with supervision, including the Road Foremen aboard, we kicked off another nocturnal test run with these awesome machines!!

Here we start......

(Bear with me folks, between road running I got in my shots when I can, and again with my continued reluctance to bring expensive DSLR cameras to work with me, I resorted to 3 MPs of cell cam!! Forgive the quality at times, folks!! And of course, with regulations in effect, NONE of this was done while the train was in motion!!)

Little after 0000 hours (12 midnight), the M-8, 6 cars, 3 pairs total, arrives on Track 107......

And a smooth stop makes her trip from New Haven complete!!

The door opens off, the yard crew which brought it from New Haven hops off, and me and my engineer hop aboard......

With lots of testing computers about and TONS (probably literally lol) of sandbags to simulate a loaded train, not much as to be seen interior-wise, but I decided to make the best with what we had!!

Interior views (just imagine the bags are gone!!)

The vestibule lighting (I love the looks of this lighting configuration!!)

The "Can" (Signs on the outside read "DO NOT USE!!".....should I tell them I used it already??? LMAO....just kiddin'!! We are, though, supposed to be breaking these things in, right??? :-D LOL)

A look inside the fare beater's best place to apply their trade on our trains!! :-D

WARNING!! Please allow 30 minutes, minimum, for the smell to ease to safe levels!! :-D LOL

The B End. Note how much like on Shoreliner III/IV Bombs, and on NJT MLVs, you have to press the button left to open the end doors, which slide horizontally across, but unlike the Shoreliner III/1V, when you hit the button, it opens BOTH doors on each side!!

Now, with the kickoff of our run getting ready, off goes my phone, and off we go!!!

After stopping at Yonkers to pick up some Kawasaki reps, and to change ends to being our tests, we stroll the platform for some wayside views!!

Now, me and my engineer (off screen at his and my own requests), board, and the tests being, load, speed and third rail operation testing!! Off goes the phone, and go goes the business at hand!!

And in a couple hours, we tie up at Harmon Yard, Track 132 in the old shop!! We give up our hold on Track 2, having completed our tests for the night SUCCESSFULLY, to the RTC District C, Form Ms fulfilled, and we get ready to deadhead back to GCT as the daylight begins in the eastern sky, and the civilized world awakes from their slumber to begin their days, as ours ends!!

But of course, you know there are always parting shots, right????

Well......

M-8 safely at Harmon, on Track 132, Old Shop......

(NOTE, those damn mercury lights wreaked havoc on my shots here!! Forgive the orangeness!!! :-P_

Folks, I think you for viewing this post, and hope you enjoyed a nice look inside one of Metro-North's newest toys to hit the rails!! Rest assured, this train can MOVE!! The brakes are on the money!! Awesome acceleration and deceleration (the techs indicated this train runs even better in AC territory!!!), and I agree this train definitely is up to the challenge of safely and reliably moving the people of New York and Connecticut for many years to come!! As always, it will have its bugs, much as any train, anywhere, but I am definitely confident, this train will, in the least, live up to the 200,000++ miles between breakdowns legacy the M-7/M-7As have set forth and more than accomplished and thensome. And again, no real problems at all occurred this night other than one broken third rail shoe!! This train is good to go in my book, and cannot wait to be moving the people from Point A to Point B and back with it!! Thumbs up here, folks!! You all shall see and judge for yourselves in due time!! I assure you, you all will definitely give it 2 thumbs up, as I do assure the people of Metro-North will feel the same way, and I am confident they will definitely be getting MUCH good feedback from the New Haven Line passengers, or pretty much anyone who steps aboard this train!! The NH will now have good competition against the Harlem & Hudson Line's M-7As!!

Thank you all for viewing!! I truly hope you all enjoyed!! :-)

All I can say is that testing will be done mostly at night after 8 or 9 PM. Do understand I cannot divulge all the details regarding that, but the runs will be mostly after hours, and Monday - Friday, and anywhere between NH and GCT and GCT and Harmon. Exact locations are always TBA (To Be Announced) and changes heavily as per MNR and Kawasaki's needs.

I have thought about it, but this camera the LG eV3 comes with holds its own pretty well.

I assure you, the pics do no justice!! When you see it in person, you will change your opinion!! I sure did, and clearly I stated in the past when I only saw the pics of it that it was an ugly train!! Seeing it in person changed the perspective!! I assure you, all of you will feel differently when you see it in person, especially the interior, minus the blue bag covers and sandbags!! :-D

Honestly, it's like a person with an amazing body but a hideous face. The interior and other amenities look AWESOME. It looks to be a rather stylish and comfy car. I do wish that SEPTA decided to get the automatic sliding doors instead of the annoyingly difficult to pull/push open M4 style doors on the Silverliner Vs.

However, the face on the M8s...yuck!

Paul, many of the engineers i've known thru the years on the NH side said that the older M series equiptment was a little sluggish on 3'd rail. Only when they hit the wire did they really spark up & run like rabbits.

Did you notice the same with the M-8's??

There's an engineer's convention in NYC. Three students from WPI and three students from MIT are attending. They're waiting for their track assignment in New Haven, and the MIT students notice that the WPI students only bought one ticket for the three of them. Then they all head up to track 12 and board a brand new M8. The MIT students take a seat in a 4 seater, and the WPI students all squeeze into the new, ADA-compliant bathroom. When the conductor comes through, he knocks on the door and says "ticket please" and they slide their one ticket under the door. This gives the MIT students an idea......so after the convention the MIT students buy 1 ticket at Grand Central, and notice that the WPI students didn't buy ANY tickets this time. So they head down to track 107 to take another brand new M8 back to Connecticut. The WPI students again squeeze into a bathroom, and the MIT students squeeze into a second bathroom. Once the train is on the move, one of the WPI students comes out of the bathroom, walks over to the other one, knocks on the door and says "ticket please" and then grabs the MIT's ticket and return to their bathroom.

There was a little big of a lag when running in DC (3rd rail), even the engineer, the road foremen, and the techs noted that, but still with the load we had (simulated, using the sandbags), the train accelerated and braked very respectably. The only issues we saw were excessive arcs, and that was because of improperly adjusted 3rd rail shoes, one of which did break off. But the train still ran damn good in DC, and the techs raved about how well she runs in AC (catenary).

The only downside is that with the cab signals bring disabled and not cut in yet, the engineer had to keep his foot on the deadman pedal, and we had to have Form M movement authority with absolute blocks established, in order to proceed, and were restricted to speeds not exceeding 59 MPH as per rules regarding operation with absolute blocks established, and Slow Speed (Not exceeding 15 MPH) thru interlockings.

The M8 is the culmination of all the HTT in MNCR, LIRR, and NYCTA I expected that everything that was learned from those cars that came before this one was put into it, all the mistakes that were made before were avoided. I expected the M8 to be the culmination of the last 15 years of HTT maturity. The M8 will break 400,000 MDBF I'm sure of it.

I sure think it is possible!! I mean look at how phenomenal the M-7/7As have done. Even MNR's M-3As have now surpassed 100,000+ miles between breakdowns!! As long as the maintenance is there, and the cars prove reliable from the word go, I think it is very well possible!!

Very interesting pics! At this point I must be the only one that doesn't care what this train looks like, Long as it has comfy seats, fast takeoff and good heat & A/C I would'nt mind riding it!

The ride is definitely A #1!!! Even though we did lag a little while running in 3rd rail DC, we still moved along and accelerated and braked at respectable rates, and the tests were passed in breezes!!

I read that the R160s have ran 650,000, miles before breakdown! Heres my source...

So there's a deadman foot pedal on the M-8's? If memory serves, the deadman was just the pressure on the controller on all M series equiptment. Is there a deadman pedal on the M-7's???

Yes, but it is only used when the cab signals are cut out, much as the situation with the M8s, where the cab signals for the time being are not operative.

Thats incredible... if the R160 can pull that then the M8 can pull of 800,000+ and if they do that, if the M8 can do 800,000 thats a distance of 1 trip arond Jupiter or nearly 2 full round trips to the moon. To think just over 20 years ago such numbers were a pipe dreams.

The M-7, and more than likely the M-8, have an alerter which goes off every 30 seconds when the throttle has not been moved or used by the operator, and if the tone that sounds is not acknowledged after about 30 seconds, maybe a little more, the train gets automatically placed into emergency, and also if cab signal drops are not acknowledged, the train gets placed into emergency automatically. Many safeguards are in place to help prevent any incidents.

I've heard them on the Bomb trains I've ridden in on from Cold Spring. I've seen penalty applications happen to rookie engineers when they come in a little to fast in the Park Ave tunnel. Then called into 25 track for an explanation.

On the now gone LIRR M-1's the sound was actually an alarm bell, as opposed to a tone ,kinda like a burglar alarm. Not good for nodding in the AM rush as for a seat choice to be in the head car..

Interesting spread, Paul, on the nice, modern-looking new fleet of New Haven Line cars. Can't wait to ride them on Shore Line East from here to GCT.

The deadman pedal on M-7 and M-8 is only to be activated when Alertor is cut out.
So no second crew member in Cab is required.
