Here's a few more from the St. Charles line, while I wait for a thunderstorm to clear out so I can hit the road…Turning from Carrollton onto St. Charles: The carbarn off Carrollton: End of the line at Carrollton and Claiborne: The fareboxes really slow down boarding. Most people pay cash, with a dollar bill and a quarter. Feeding those dollar bills into the machine is the real time-killer. On the St. Charles cars, the farebox is right next to the operator, so he usually takes the dollar bills while the passengers feed their quarters into the machine. Then as he gets going, he feeds the dollar bills into the machine. On the Canal/Riverfront cars, that method doesn't work because the machines are behind the operator's seat. So the operator gets up, helps people feed the machine, and then sits down and gets the car moving again. This makes for really long dwell times at busy stops. |

I'm still coming out, but it won't be next weekend. I had to put off the start of the trip for a few days because I broke a tooth and had to go to the dentist to get fitted for a crown. I've got a temporary crown right now, which I'm trying to be careful with so I don't have to look for a dentist on the road. :-(Right now I'm figuring on next Tuesday and Wednesday for San Diego, and Thursday through Saturday for LA, Saturday being mainly for OERM. It might slip back a day or two depending on how long I stay in Tucson. I might end up adding a day if there's stuff left over to see. If we could meet up somewhere, that would be great. |

(I forgot to label my second batch of New Orleans pics as "part 2.")I couldn't resist driving past the outer ends of the Canal Street line as I was leaving New Orleans this morning. First I drove out to the City Park terminal, and saw a car laying over. So I backtracked a few blocks on Carrollton, parked, and waited for it to come by: Then I parked near the Cemeteries terminal and got a couple more shots: Five seconds after I got back in the car and closed the door, it started to pour again. I didn't get quite as far on the road today as I originally planned. I just barely made it into Texas, a few miles past the welcome center on I-10. But I'll probably still be able to spend a few hours in Houston tomorrow, on the way to Austin where I'll stay the next couple of nights. |

When I arrived in Austin late this afternoon, I decided to head out to the end of the Metro Rail line in Leander before going to my motel. As I approached Leander on US 183, I saw a single track come up alongside the road and run parallel to it. I figured that must be Metro Rail. Sure enough, a bit further on, I saw a train in the distance. Was it coming or going? It turned out, neither! As I got closer, this is the scene I saw:Note the automobile on the track. What you can't see from this angle is that its left front is bashed in. How did it get on the track? Did the train hit it? I don't know. The train didn't look obviously damaged, at least on the side facing the road. I went on to the Leander station, about a mile further up the road. Nobody there except for a couple of people apparently waiting to pick up passengers from the train. They didn't know anything. I picked up a map and timetable. As I left the station, the EMS van zoomed by with its lights flashing. Was it carrying someone from the automobile or from the train? I don't know. I haven't found anything on the local TV station web sites yet. Hopefully there will be something on the 10 PM news. |

No crossing there, as far as I could see. The nearest crossing in the forward direction is at the top of the rise where you can just make out the traffic lights for the crossroad. Yeah, that would have been a nice shot even without the emergency action. It would have been harder to pull off going down the road at 55 mph, chasing a train going 45-50, instead of crawling past a stopped train.Still haven't found out anything about what happened. Nothing in this morning's newspaper. Didn't catch any of the local early morning TV news shows. I drove past there this morning and there is a small crossroad a few hundred feet north of where the car ended up last night. So maybe the driver got confused or drunk, and turned onto the tracks. At the location of the crossing the ROW is wider because there's a passing siding there, and the crossing is a nice new concrete one. |

On my way to Austin yesterday, I stopped in Houston for a couple of hours. The park-n-ride at Fannin South is easy to get to from I-610. I rode downtown to the end of the line at UH-Downtown and walked through downtown along Main Street, taking pictures as I went. After about an hour of that, I rode back to Fannin South and continued on my way. Here are some shots from downtown, along Main Street.The bridge coming down from UH-Downtown. The Preston St. station: Trains run right through the fountain at Main Street Square: Finally, my favorite light rail station anywhere. Guess why. :-) |

The first thing I learned when I got off the plane my first time there, as a NYer was that we had to slow WAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY down. I remember we just walked through the airport with our mouths open, as it was so different than NY. I noticed most people in New Orleans are basically slow and stop (not criticizing, just saying how different it is than NY where we want everything fast on steroids). It's funny you mention the boarding, as I have a funny trip from when I was on the St Charles Streetcar saome years ago on the Carrolton segment. All of a sudden, the streetcar just stops, and the driver gets out, and says "I'll be right back folks". He walks out of his parked streetcar and walks across the street to a sandwich shop. Is in there some minutes (as other streetcars slowly back up behind us. Everyone on the streetcar just sat patiently, not saying a word, not complaining (picture the same when a subway car stops in the tunnel in NY, lol) A few minutes later, he walks out of the shop with a bag with a sandwich in it, gets back into the streetcar, it putters up, and off we go...... |

This turned out to be a long day.Austin MetroRail's schedule is mostly inbound in the morning and outbound in the afternoon, six trips apiece in the primary direction. There are fewer reverse-direction trips, and only one apiece in AM and PM goes the whole length of the route. Furthermore, a complete round trip from Leander to downtown and back fills up most of the morning or afternoon operating period, leaving little or no time for chasing around taking pictures along the line. So, I got up early this morning to catch the 5:25 from Leander, the first trip into town. It arrives downtown at 6:27, then leaves again at 6:41, finally returning to Leander at 7:43. The inbound trip was mostly in complete darkness: I should have remembered to take my MacBook along, because the trains have free wi-fi. Twilight arrived just before we arrived downtown, and I could actually see where we were going during the outbound trip. When we got back to Leander the sun was well above the horizon but partly obscured by thin clouds. This ended the morning's activities, because there were still only a couple of other trains en route downtown, and there was no way I could have caught them. So I went back to the motel, posted the Houston pictures, ate an early lunch and took a nap. Chasing the afternoon's trains was fairly successful. I drove all the way downtown, then back out to Leander. I think I passed by all the stations, but I passed some of them by because the lighting was wrong and there were no mitigating factors to override that. Here's the Downtown station again in daylight. When I first saw this, I did a double take because the stations can't handle two-car trains! Then I looked more closely and saw that they weren't coupled together. The 4:55 train was waiting behind the 4:20 train. Most stations have a single platform and a single track. Two stations have two tracks: MLK, Jr. (with a single center platform) and Kramer (with two side platforms). These are the stations where inbound and outbound trains regularly meet. Here's a meet at Kramer, followed by the departure of the northbound train: Kramer puzzles me. It's rather far out from downtown. The biggest possible traffic generator nearby is a UT research campus, but it's a bit of a hike. Otherwise there's only typical suburban light industry, and a small shopping center about a quarter mile away. No residential development nearby, as far as I could see. One bus route runs past the station. Yet there's no parking! I parked at the shopping center and walked back to the station, just in time to get the pictures. I did see some people waiting for the trains. Finally, here's a scene along the final stretch towards the end of the line at Leander, which runs right alongside US 183 (Bell Blvd.!). Doesn't this remind you of the old-time side-of-the-road interurbans? :-) |

I started in South Carolina, and I think my wife will be pretty mad if I don't end in South Carolina. :-DI'm figuring 3-4 weeks altogther for this trip. Eight days to Tucson (including one-day stops in New Orleans and Austin). Then three days in Tucson, maybe more (including a day trip to Phoenix). I have some family business there. Then a day to Southern California. Then five days in SoCal. Then at least six days to get home, including a day in Albuquerque for the New Mexico Rail Runner. And there are a bunch of places I could stop on the way home from Albuquerque: El Reno, Fort Smith, Memphis and Nashville. My wife doesn't mind if I go on trips like this once in a while, so I don't have to drag her along on similar excursions as often when we travel together. :-) |

Yesterday I took a daytrip from Tucson to Phoenix. The eastern terminal of the Valley Metro light rail in Mesa is just east of the AZ-101 expressway and easy to get to. A one-way trip end to end takes 65 minutes for 20 miles. Most of the line is in the median of arterial streets, like on Central Ave. near the McDowell station:The eastern end of the line at 19th Ave. & Montebello. A single car is on the tail track, with a two-car train in service at the station platform: Coming out of the station at Camelback / 19th, turning from Camelback Road onto 19th Ave. The supporting wires from the diagonally opposite corner where I'm standing are really long! The only significant section of private right of way runs past the Arizona State University campus in Tempe. Right next to the station at Veterans Way / College Avenue (next to the ASU football stadium) is Hayden Butte, which I climbed to the top for a nice view of the bridge over the Salt River. At first I thought the colored lights in the pavement between the tracks were reflectors like I've seen on highways, but then I saw they're actually signals for the switches: |

I've said this before, but I was pretty impressed with the routing for the line. It hits plenty of business and cultural destinations. Maybe not enough residential neighborhoods, but since those are relatively low density in Phoenix that may be just as well. |

Re: the last pic, I think L. A.'s Blue Line has similar lights in downtown Long Beach, on 1st St (Transit Mall), just before the single track splits into 2 for the Transit Mall station. I think the T/O has to press the "non-mainline request" button on his/her console and then the switch sets and the appropriate light comes on (green for straight ahead, yellow for diverging). The default if the station is empty is straight ahead, not sure if the T/O has to "punch" in that case. This was when the line first opened in 1990, almost 20 years later, things could be different. |
