I don't like Bowery.I would have to agree with you. There just isn't very much to see at that station except for the non-defunct northbound platform. The others stations on the Centre Street Line ; Essex, Canal and Chambers have much more to offer; abandoned platforms, long forgotten connections, abandoned mezzanines, not to metion a whole underground trolley terminal. Yes Bowery, a forgotten station on the street of forgotten men. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

Sutphin Blvd on Archer Ave.Not only do I think the whole Archer Line is a complete waste of potential & ill conceived, but it is poorly lit(Most IND stations were brighter when opened). It is dark, dingy, decepit. Think about the bigger picture.RailRoad stations were built as gateways to a city.Civic pride dictated the most grandiose palace affordable.(Think of any indusrial giant at the turn of the 20th Century- Buffalo;Chicago;Cleveland;Detroit;Scranton). A visitor from Asia or Europe flys into JFK & avails themselves of the Airtrain. Now they board the system at Sutphin/Archer.Isn't it nice the canopy they pass under on the platform protecting them from leaking water? What first impression do they get? Who was it that said a society can be judged by what architecture it tolerates? |

The CPW local stations between 59th and 125th St., with the exceptions of 81st and 110th St. I couldn't pick one because they are all so bland that they look the same. Almost no color to the stations at all except for the white tiles and the dirt-colored concrete floors. The stations are dimly lit, and the fact that there is no lit platform on the opposite side makes the stations even darker. Plus, service sucks on both the lines that serve the stations... |

While it may represent an "invasion" of the BMT by the IND, in reality, after Mayor Hylan left office, the concept of the IND changed from being competition for the BMT to a possible extension of existing BMT lines. Had the city not insisted on retention of the 5 cent fare, the BMT would have likely been more willing to assume operation of the new lines as part of the BMT system and a number of the changes that did take place would have happened anyhow even if in a slightly different form. For example, S/O 59 St/Columbus Circle, the tracks intended for the present 6 Av Line would probably have been connected to the BMT's spur tracks N/O 57 St and the actual 6 Av Line not even built. |

The 7th Avenue/53d St. IND station is awful, and the last rehab of the station was a waste. The station has poor waterproofing, inferior floor tiles, peeling paint, an encampment of homeless men, and in general a dank, gloomy, urine-scented atmosphere. For me, it's both 205th Street on the D, and the Chambers Street BMT station. 205th Street looks worse each time I go down there. Ceiling falling apart, occasional leaks, broken tiles, enough said. As for Chambers Street BMT, it's as bad as 205th, if not worse, and the stench at the southern end of the platform is nauseatingly horrendous. The rats & the homeless' combined stench make for a sickening commute on the J/M/Z from Chambers. I try to avoid that station like the plague. |

Lawrence St. I used to use that station from the M train years back (when the M ran to South Brooklyn all day). I can't think of a more depressing station to wait for a train, and that after taking the Montague tunnel, on which was usually an empty train. I was miserable. I soon switched my route to getting off the M at Essex/Delancey and taking the F to Jay St-Borough Hall instead, and even though it was two trains instead of one, it was a much more pleasant commute. I HATED the Montague tunnel and Lawrence St. |

Out of curiosity, was Lawrence St station always untiled? What's the story behind that? The story behind that is that it was an "afterthought" station. It was built by the BMT at a later date, after the line was already running. They decided they needed a station there, and built it in the middle of the subway tunnel. The only other afterthought station that I know of is 23rd St-Ely Ave on the IND. That's another station built after the line was already running. that's also why the tiles don't fit in with the IND color scheme. In my opinion, it's one of the most attractive IND stations in the system. The color scheme is great, and the tilework in excellent condition. Some difference between the4 two afterthought stations....Lawrence St is one of the worst stations, if not the worst in the system, and 23rd St-Ely is one of the nicest IND stations, in my opinion. |
