There's a similar problem with 86th St. in Brooklyn. There's one on the N and one on the R and they are far, far apart. You have to inquire if a lost passanger wants the 86th St. by the Verazanno (R) or the one underneath the projects (N). |

There are many additional examples of this in New York because of the size of the city, the subways, and the fact that Brooklyn and Queens have street numbering schemes that have no relation to Manhattan or The Bronx. Some more examples: 103rd Street is on the #1 and #7 lines but many miles distant from each other. 111th Street is on the J and the #7 line. 86th Street is on the #1, B/C, #4/5/6 as well as the two Brooklyn stations you noted. |

She probably was confused at "59th St" because someone must have told her to take the S train at 42nd St, and somehow she wound up all the way over there....looking for "42nd St"... |

To me, that should be done by adding the cross-street, neighborhood, or route. example, Kings Highway stations could be marked: Kings Highway/Culver, Kings Highway/Brighton, or Kings Highway/Sea Beach.86 Street stations could be named: 86 Street/Bay Ridge, 86 Street/Sea Beach, 86 Street/East Side, 86 Street/Central Park West, and 86 Street/Broadway. |

Yeah, but none with the potential of mass confusion as 86th St. The R has two 36th Sts, but each is in a different boro at opposite ends of the line. Same thing with 7th Ave on the B. |

Yup, but most subway amateurs go by the station names, not the secondary exits/entrances. So if a tourist asks me on an uptown N train in Manhattan about "59th Street", I automatically think 59th-Lex, even though the N platform is called "Lexington Ave" |

Broadway on the N/W and G.That one actually produced a hilarious error on some subway directions website a few years ago. To get from Nassau Avenue to Queensboro Plaza (or something like that), one transferred at Broadway. |

Correct - thanks for adding those to the list. And to make it even more confusing: Rockaway Ave. - on A and 3/4 trains Rockaway Parkway - on the L Rockaway Park - on the A/S Far Rockaway - on the A Rockaway Blvd. - on the A along with Far Rockaway and East Rockaway on the LIRR. and then the all-time station mis-identification that was literally miles apart: I live on the LIRR Long Beach Branch. Some years ago someone boarded my train at Penn Sta with an NJ Transit ticket to Long Branch. Apparently the person saw the destination sign posted at Penn and didn't read it correctly and got on the LIRR. I explained to the person how to reverse direction at Jamaica, and go back to Penn Station, and start over again. |

I don't particularly like the sound of this, but 86 St/4 Av could be labeled as "86 Street - Staten Island Bus(es)" since it's a big transfer point for Staten Island. The problem with "Bay Ridge" is that you have on the maps "Bay Ridge Av" and "Bay Ridge-95 St" already. So after adding another Bay Ridge, someone could ask how to get to Bay Ridge from 59 St ... there would be 3 possibilities. |

No, you tell her to disregard any other directions she has to get to her destination station, and make ONE transfer; rather than have someone who is already confused have to navigate the Times Square complex (easy as it is to go from the N to the shuttle) and then wend their way through the crowds at GCT. KISS. |
