I thought that when the line first opened in 1917, the tracks ran down the middle of the upper level and the lower level was reserved for cars. Then when more car capacity was needed, two lanes were opened on the upper level and the 2nd Ave line was shunted to one side.

I do know from the construction photos that the trackways were built directly down the middle of the upper level but I have never seen any photos of trains actually operating there so I don't know if they ever operated that way at all or whether the trackways were moved before actual operation began.

That is a classic image of NYC's Elevated Railway History.
I put up an album of Second Ave El Queensboro Bridge images showing the construction and later modification to the trackway.

You are facing the wrong direction.

The El was on the north side of the bridge. It's on the right side of the picture. That means the picture is facing west or towards Manhattan. You are facing towards Queens.

The tracks were moved circa 1928, 1929. I've seen pictures of the operation with trains and tracks in the between two inboard pedestrian paths. Unfortunately, I cannot find one on the web.

Found a couple of photos of the original configuration. Click on the link below, then follow the Google Books preview link. Page 70 of the book has as-built photos of the upper level.

Nice shots. This one clearly shows that the tracks used to run down the middle, and exactly where they were moved to the south side of the bridge:

That picture is on the Manhattan side looking east. The tracks move from the middle to the left in this view. That puts them move to the north side of the bridge. The automobile lanes were on the south side of the bridge.

In the original pic, at least some of the autos are westbound? But in one of Mellow One's pics they're all eastbound?

Duh, I should have noticed the BMT tracks from the tubes if it was the Queens side.

It looks to me as if the tracks were shunted over to make room for 2 lanes of auto traffic built much later than the bridge itself.

They used to change the direction of the upper roadway, depending on the time of day. The entrance on the Queens side was at Thompson Ave and the entrance on the Manhattan side was 57th St between First and Second Aves.

Thanks for the link Mr. Mellow. I once had a metal plate sign that said "Flushing Express". Not sure if there was an arrow through it or not.
This pic is my favorite.

Thanks, of course, this image shows the BMT usage of the former 2nd Ave El tracks at the Queeens end of the bridge. I believe that the track to the left is a reversing siding for the BMT El cars to use while the line was still under the dual operation until 1949.

I've heard 2 stories why the service ended on June 13th, 1942. The first one was declining ridership, after the 1939 Worls's Fair. The second one was real estate interests killed it and to have the scrap steel sold for the war effort. Which one is true?

Probably the second story.

While ridership was declining because the crowds weren't going to the World's Fair, People were moving out to Queens and the ridership was going to be there.
