Virginia Rail Solution?

I came across this concept drawing of a proposed upgrade to Norfolk Southern's route paralleling I-81 in Virginia in looking for stuff for another post. IMHO the NS Mo-No-Chrome Traxx/Eurosprinter locomotive and the Acela to god knows where make it a fairly entertaining image. Like the other image from Cooper Consulting it shows an attachment to Chunnel or SBB-like truck-on-train Ro-Ro operation with a dedicated passenger car for the truck drivers. And like the Maglev in the California photo I have no idea why anyone would run an Acela out around Roanoke, especially considering most SEHSR plans call for electrification well to the east of there. But hey, if they manage to resurrect some of the Virginian's old wired territory then that'd be really cool.

Heh, BBD Traxx on NS. Concept art is great. (Too few locomotives, though.)

(Could the artist draw long doors, steps and trapdoors on the Acela Express too? because low platforms are definitely going to stay south of WAS and within WAS.)

I love it. I 81 is a meat grinder of semis. Course, NS, like ALL the other big RRs is part of the 'cut our taxes, stop wasting them on..." oligarchy, BUT when it is corporate welfare they are standing in line hat in hand. NS has been trying for years to get VA to front for doubletracking the Valley line instead of spending stockholder money. Would electrification be worth it? Yeah, I think it would be useful, 2 tracks sufficient, Acela dream on. Roanoke DC passenger service should go ex SOU via Charlottesville. I doubt passenger service up the Valley to Hagerstown/Harrisburg would be well used. OTOH, if NS could get their freight times competitive w/trucks, no expansion of I 81 would be needed. Current Allentown-Birgmingham times are shamefully slow even though Forbes wrote them up as sa major improvement.

Somebody's got high hopes for Roanoke, like you say, unless that Acela is coming from further south like maybe Knoxville, TN Great image though.

81 is a heavy truck route although it's not jammed up IIRC.

Fred
