Course, NS, like ALL the other big RRs is part of the 'cut our taxes, stop wasting them on..." oligarchy, BUT when it is corporate welfare they are standing in line hat in hand. NS has been trying for years to get VA to front for doubletracking the Valley line instead of spending stockholder money. Would electrification be worth it? Yeah, I think it would be useful, 2 tracks sufficient, Acela dream on. Roanoke DC passenger service should go ex SOU via Charlottesville. I doubt passenger service up the Valley to Hagerstown/Harrisburg would be well used. OTOH, if NS could get their freight times competitive w/trucks, no expansion of I 81 would be needed. Current Allentown-Birgmingham times are shamefully slow even though Forbes wrote them up as sa major improvement. |
