So when are the R46 cars making it's debut on the C line. Maybe traindude, widecab 5 or northeastern t/o can bring us up-to-date.

They're already there. A couple of rush hour runs and the heavier weekend trains are already using them.

Original "M" Logo.

LION remembers the ta logo, and thought that it was the cat's meow.

AND *that* was the original logo on the R-32s

Love it. Called crew office for PM O/T one day (double). They had a job on the CC. I balked. Crew Dispatcher said I would probably have to pick something like it next time around (was then XXL Queens on the AM's and uptown was anathema). I consented.

Sweetheart of a job (way less than 8-hours work). Put in 6-R46 cars laid up south of East New York Station and went n/b from there to Bedford Park. Return trip to Rock Park and take a lay-up to Pitkin. Probably done by 8 pm: let's see, double, deadhead time, night diff, continous time. Not bad in one day for someone who didn't want an "uptown" job.

If we had six, it was usuually ABBAAB. That way there were two Conductors operation positions near the center of the train. I preferred the 4-car jobs on the F late at night. One could make time with those babies. Once I passed/saw the Conductor's Board, I knew the 4-cars were in the station. Stop train, Conductor popped doors, and we got in the wind. Of course, STL held us at W8 either because we were to the good, or they had two full pockets at 1:00 AM, or both.

There should be enough of the R46 AA units to allow for 6 car C trains in a ABBAAA configuration. The only problem is that if they do that, then the TA will need to install C/R boards for that configuration and decide which end of the train will have the AA unit.

R32's will run on the C line UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

Before Pitkin's R32's are retired en-masse, the R32/40M/R42 fleet has to be retired at Jamaica. Please don't be that dense to expect an exact date for this fleet of over 300 cars to be replaced because there are lots of variables involved.

Since the C train runs eight car trains, why can't the C train run 8 car train as well with the R46. There's no reason on why this can't be done.

8x60 does not equal 8x75. Using 8 R44/46 on the C would give the line full-length trains. Much like the other C in NJ doesn't run 10-car Comets, 9-car MLVs, and 12-car Arrow IVs.

More than likely, it may happen based on the fact that by the time the R-32's retire, the only cars left on the A and C line are 75 ft. car trains.

More than likely it may end up being an 8 car 75 ft train :P

Correct me if I'm wrong about this...

They were used on the Then Rush Hour Only CC line in 1981 or 82 when the Rockwell Trucks began to fail. It was a good way of keeping them in service, saving a lot of wear and tear on them. A side benefit was having the R-10's on the E and F lines in their place.

Maybe to a railfan, but not for us who had to operate them. They could not handle the tough operating enviornment of the E/F. They could hardly handle the GG. They could hardly handle making a trip on the AM and a trip on the PM on the CC. I don't know how they survived the winters on the Rock Pk. shuttle. One harsh winter they couldn't and we had a dedicated fleet of slants to handle it from Euclid to the Rock. They were victims of poor maintance.

Not to the geese on the Queens Blvd line who reportedly were bitching to the high heavens when their new air conditioned R-46's were replaced with noisy, hot, graffittied artens.

I was rather delighted witnessing a train of R-10s on the (E) signed up for Hudson Terminal !

I'd forgo air conditioning to ride an arten (especially on the A). My dad says I rode an R10, but I don't remember it; I was two years old when they were retired. And in any case, they weren't the same in their last days on the C. :(

"Maybe to a railfan, but not for us who had to operate them."
I liked that but that control stand could be a problem for the family jewels. Your mileage may vary.

However us Queens prima-donnas were largely spoiled by the 46. Carry a couple of keys. Oh, now I need a brake handle and reverser?

"They could not handle the tough operating enviornment of the E/F."
Sure they could. Made many a trip to STL or WTC (and back, lol) with them. Some were fast, and some were slow; but that was true of all equipment.

"They could hardly handle the GG."
The Galloping Gangster was a breeze. Esp south of the Plaza where the temperature dropped; made a difference in cars w/o AC.

"They could hardly handle making a trip on the AM and a trip on the PM on the CC. I don't know how they survived the winters on the Rock Pk. shuttle. One harsh winter they couldn't and we had a dedicated fleet of slants to handle it from Euclid to the Rock. They were victims of poor maintance."

No comments on most of that. Only operated them on the A/CC when i broke in there (after that, on those lines, I had the accursed 40's and 42's; hate them with a passion as well as the 38's on the "B", oh sorry the West End.)

"victims of poor maintenance"
Thems fighting words. I came from RTO, but C&S/CMD/CED and whatever they are called today (while still doing the same quality work) could probably disagree.

Precisely the same complaint I once heard from an "F" train rider while he boarded a Queens-bound R-10 that I was riding in [#3155] at 47th-50th Streets. He wanted to know, probably not totally familiar to the fact the cars ran on other lines including the "GG", if they were put into service after being taken "out of mothballs".

By the way, I rode the R-10's on the "E" line 20 times, and on the "F" just only on six occasions. One of the cars that I rode on the "E" was on a Manhattan-bound run was with its lead motor #3189, which still survives today.
