This is off the top of my head so I may be wrong but that's how I remember the service to 57th/6th (1987 to 1990):Evenings: Grand St. shuttle - JFK Express - 63rd St. opens - F/Q(weekends B) - Evening B Late nights: Grand St. shuttle - F/Q The Q shuttle shown on the map from those days was the F/Q. I don't recall Q trains terminating at Broad-Laf or Second Ave. |

Bill, where where you when I tried to start threads (about a year ago) about crazy stuff going on during midnight runs? You could have contributed this...I'd imagine that midnight runs, especially back "in the day" would be a madhouse of pulled cords, fights, and copulation of all varieties. |

So this part "F/Q(weekends B)" should be "Q shuttle" instead. But where did they really turn it at? It couldn't have been Broadway-Lafayette with the D running, so Second Ave? |

I never rode it, but I saw them from other trains, using Q train sets. My 1990 map has it listed as terminating at B-L. |

In those days, there was a period in the early evenings after the Brighton Q stopped running and the F started going to 21 St. To fill the gap in service, a Q shuttle operated between 2 Av and 21 St as a 6 Av local. |

I checked some maps.April 1990 has that evening Q shuttle that replaced the evening JFK Express, the F becomes the F/Q at nights (on the map it says ends at 47/50). September 1990, the evening B replaces the Q shuttle, night F/Q service unchanged. So the Q shuttle only existed for five months and I was working at a bar and rarely had the chance to ride the subway at the hours it ran. No wonder I don't remember it! (This map also has both sides of the Manny B open, which only lasted weeks.) May 1992, unchanged. April 1993, the F/Q is officially renamed the F. Thus begins the time when the 63rd St. line had three different routes depending of the time of the day. And later on, there were the yellow S (to 57th or 34th), orange B shuttle (21st St. to Second Ave.), orange S shuttle (21st St. to Broad-Laf) and so on until the connector opened and the F became the normal service at all times. |

The large window rollers on the sides said something like "(F) 21 ST-QUEENSBRIDGE to CONEY ISLAND (Q)". Something roughly like that.Bob |

Reminds me somewhat of a designation on some of the Redbirds "(2) to the Bronx | (5) to Brooklyn" which I believe was used on some G.O.s during the 90s, but I never saw one in service. On the IRT 100th Anniversary run, I turned the rollsigns in one car to that reading at Atlantic Av before a foamer came by and promptly corrected them to "(2) 7 Avenue Exp". This was despite the fact that the (2)/(5) was more accurate to the actual route the train ran which was South on Lex and North on 7 Av. |
