LOL let's send a TEAM of investigators to the site, label it a crime scene, and have all trains bypass the station (or better reroute the G up 6th Ave) until we can find a solution. |

I was working at 23 Street. No one wanted to get on a G train going to Queens because it wasn't the F! And this happened during rush hour!<<I can vouch that story in a similar fashion, when in 1984, I recall riding a rerouted "GG" train of R-10's during the PM rush hour going uptown via 6th Avenue. I rode that train, which ran in the normal way between Smith-9th Street (where I had got on) and Bergen Street, then over to Queens Plaza (where I had left) along the "F" route's tracks. Just like in your message, the R-10 "GG" train had few passengers while operating in Manhattan, and also very few passengers would get on because they wanted the "F" too. Now, I wonder what happens today when Court Square-bound R-46 "G" trains cannot go up the Crosstown Line...rerouted again on 6th Avenue as far as Queens Plaza only??? -William A. Only problem of course is it would cause an equipment shortage on the G's opposite direction. |

I wonder what happens today when Court Square-bound R-46 "G" trains cannot go up the Crosstown Line...rerouted again on 6th Avenue as far as Queens Plaza only???I would think the G train would go OOS at Queens Plaza, Run light to 5 track between Queens Plaza and 36 Street, change ends, go back into service at Queens Plaza and either go back to Smith-9th via regular route or via 6th Avenue. I was going to say G trains would run light to 179 Street to turn if service is congested. Then again G service doesn't run that often during rush hour anyway to cause congestion. |

Some of the queens IND statins have other oddities some of them related to proposed branches of the Qns Blvd Line to Rockaway from the Winfield Cutoff and Whitpot Jct. Although it may have been removed by now, there was a mosiac sign near the N/E stariway to the N/B platform at 65 St which read, upon extremely careful scrutiny, "Trains to Jamaica and Rockaway" with the words "and Rockaway" painted out. If you looked at the tiles from the appropriate angle you could see the out line of the words "and Rockaway" under the paint. I have heard that some of the other Qns IND stations have similar signs but 65 st was the only one I have seen personally. I don't know about the other stations along the IND Fulton St Line but the original signs at Euclid and Grant read "To Lefferts Ave and the Rockaways" and the word "Ave" was replaced in a different typeface with the word "Blvd." Lefferts Blvd was called Lefferts Ave for many years and that is what the station sign and train destination signs read. Nobody who lived in that neighborhood could tell me when the change from Ave to Blvd was made, but it was probably some time during the construction of the IND connection to the Fulton St El considering how the info signs were initially painted. Lefferts wasn't the only avenue in Queens to be upgraded to a boulevard. Ditmars Blvd , Astoria Blvd and Junction Blvd were all originally avenues and were upgraded for some reason. |

Nobody who lived in that neighborhood could tell me when the change from Ave to Blvd was made, but it was probably some time during the construction of the IND connection to the Fulton St El considering how the info signs were initially painted. That was back in 1915. After the Queens numbering system was set up, The city spent the 15-20 years with dual names of their streets before they started enforcing the new names. The IRT and BMT never changed the names of their stations in Queens. That's why there are stations called Fisk, Alburtis, Hudson, Greenwood and so on. Streets run north and south. Avenues run east and west. there was a mosiac sign near the N/E stariway to the N/B platform at 65 St which read, upon extremely careful scrutiny, "Trains to Jamaica and Rockaway" with the words "and Rockaway" painted out. Pictures of that sign has been shown in here before "To Rockaway" was painted out. I think now a metal sign has been put up covering the mosiac sign. That pic has been shown in here as well. |

KYA were the legendary call letters for the San Francisco radio station best known on the AM dial in the 1950's and 1960's with a Top 40 format (where the late Tom Donohue was once a DJ there), and on the FM dial in the 1980's playing oldies (with Celeste Perry doing the PM drive time shift). Now, oldies can heard in San Francisco on another revived version of KFRC, but on the AM dial 1550 with a 24/7 syndicated format programmed by Scott Shannon.-William A. Padron ["Bay Area Radio"] |
