It wouldn't be a problem with the interlocking, the problem would exist between the chair and controller.

If the F59 was the first car in the metrolink train, how did the gasoline tanks hold up? IIRC the crash with the MARC and amtrak train a few years ago the F40's had an design flaw with the gas tanks casuing it to blow up.

Alright, one shouldn't buy 1960's British Leyland era designed stock that was later updated by the French. Oh, Metrolink is run by Connex, which now operates as Veolia Transportation, which in turn, you guessed it, is a French company.

If you go and look at the wreck site here, its pretty clear what happened. The wreck happened on a portion of single track territory needed to go through some tunnels. It's about 1/4 mile past the end of double track territory on a sharp curve. The Metrolink had just entered the single track territory. In this situation the most likely cause is that the Metrolink engineer was expecting a clear signal at the entrance to the single track line, however an opposing freight train had been given the line instead. Basically the dispatcher fucked up and caused the Metrolink to be hit by a Stop signal, however this was such an out of the ordinary occurrence the Metrolink Engineer just saw what he was accustomed to seeing and blew through the interlocking as if it was clear.

Even if this line had ATS it would not have changed anything because both Approach Diverging and Diverging Clear would have set off the ATS alerter.

The Silver Spring collision happened at about 40 mph, as I recall it. The MARC II cab car ruptured the fuel tank on the AMTK F40PH, and the MARC II car had a good chunk immediately torn away and then covered in diesel fuel which was ignited and burned. One hopes that those on the MARC train doused with the fuel mercifully lapsed into unconsciousness before they were burned and choked to death.

At least parts of Metrolink territory had an ATS system inherited from ATSF, which enabled 90 mph operation, but that system was removed during an overhaul, and apparently the plan in the 1990s was that Metrolink would install cab signals, something that they never got around to doing. Reportedly, appropriate track circuits were installed in some places that would enable cab signals to work, but nothing else came of it.

I don't understand why push/pull is a "controversy" at all. The LIRR has done push/pull for as far back as I can remember. There have been several accidents at grade involving LIRR trains in push mode. The one that stands out in my memory is a horrific incident at Herricks Road in 1982. A van full of teenagers high on God Knows What was struck by an FA, with predictable results for the kids. But unlike the LA incident in which a suicidal person parked his Jeep on the tracks, there was no derailment, and the only fatalities in the 1982 incident were the kids in the van.

God rest the unfortunate victims of yesterday's accident, and watch over those who were injured.

The telescoping occurred because the Metrolink train struck a much heavier freight train, essentially pushing the loco straight back into the car behind it. I am surprised to see, as Port Authority has posted, that the Metrolink cars do not appear to be equpiied with anticlimbers, which I imagined to be de rigeur for passenger cars.

I am wondering how the Metrolink train could have entered this block, because (as others have posted) it would have trailed a switch set against it to do so.

I think the investigation will focus on these points:

Which train had authority to occupy the block where the accident occurred?

How were the signals and switches set?

Did either engineer disregard the signals and/or authority given him?

Did either engineer suffer illness or injury immediately prior to impact?

Is the data from the event recorders readable, and what will it reveal?
