Most freight organizations have run-through operations. UP locomotives show up on CSX, and CSX locomotives undoubtedly show up on UP routes. Like there used to be pool cabooses, so also there are pool locomotives.

Beyond that, they do lease each others locomotives, they also loan them, or sell them in trade and could be a lease unit that had not been painted into the lease company's colors yet, but in that case you would see the call letters and numbers painted over (but not necessarily the "billboard" display of the original owner's scheme.

There was a lot of info over on the TrainOrders. The UP train was headed by two SD70Ms and had been on the single track for a long period of time. The track is dispatched by Metrolink. Speed limit is 40 MPH both directions. Posters there feel the Metrollink train left two track territory...siding and main... and entered the single track and collision occurred.

I'm no expert, but human error and the signal system are looking like suspects; moreso the former.

NTSB will definitely be looking into this, I agree. If it does turn out to be human error attributable to one or more of the engineers, that would militate heavily in favor of an ATC system.

But if there are NO signals, then isn't the rule of operation changed to provide the maximum speed based on the maximum stopping distance?

And there ARE signals on that track, the Metrolink train merged onto a single track, and I think there is a "home signal" there.

And it turns out metrolink has NO signalling WITHIN the trains themselves.

Seat belts....those certainly come in handy when the locomotive pulling your train runs into your chest at 50+ mph......

It's a PM Peak train on a Friday and there was telescoping and perhaps a fuel fire - pray for the best, but I doubt that anyone has high expectations, particularly in the head car.

I've been watching continuous coverage on KTLA, ch 5, in LA, on my satellite dish for the last hour. (Dish Network channel 232). They are now saying it is confirmed 7 people are dead, and 40 injured. It appears the toll will be much higher.

The commuter train was Metrolink #111, which collided head on with a Union Pacific Freight. The freight loco is clearly visible on its side. The passenger loco appears to have telescoped about halfway down the length of the first passenger car.

Reporters at the scene are saying that rescue people are estimating 350 people were on the passenger train.

Sure, they look big and tough, but these cars are basicall just sheet metal- NO FRAMES. Collision posts mounted to sheet metal= TELESCOPE.

Even the Amfleets that were involved in the cape may wreck didn't shred open like that, I think, and that ws at HIGHER speeds.

Push-pull operation is a sensitive topic for Metrolink. Many argue that Metrolink's Glendale disaster in 2005 was made worse by the fact that that train had been operating in push mode at the time of the accident -- they claim that had the heavier locomotive been pulling the train, it wouldn't have jackknifed and caused the second train to derail.

This, of course, is a moot point now -- as the Chatsworth train was being pulled by a F59PH.

However, Amfleets were built by BUDD. And I REMEMBER that once when I was in cape may, I rode BUDDs. I rode TWO RDCs... One under its own power, one hauled by a loco(GEEP9!!!)...and I remember it was posted here that they are being sold for 24,000 dollars, I think, each, or 124,000 dollars.

But they don't build quality railcars like that anymore. That is why I am ANGRY that the MTA CRIME ADMINISTRATION is reefing THE BEST CARS now: THE BUDDS.

That's a question that's going to have to be posed to the dispatchers over that stretch of track. They are the ones that are supposed to give the "all clear" to trains (be it freight or pax) - a role that takes on even more critical importance when you're on single track operation.

In this case you get in the passenger car behind the loco and you are seriously injured or dead. You get in any of the other cars and you walk away. Some injured, but many without a scratch. Weird.

I am sorry to be reporting this: DT=15 and likely to climb, judging by the severe telescoping.
